Okay, adreesing a couple topics, but very related. The topics are Steve Williams comments and Tigers Tourney.
Fact: Everyone loves Tiger. He is great for the game. He is the "World's best golfer" (etc...etc...etc...) What do we all share here? We all love the game and argue about rules/clubs/approach..
How come the worlds best player really wont invite the #2 player in the world or whatever he is) to his tournament? We all know he is one of the best at the game regardless of what clubs we think he should use, or how we feel he carries himself...no off-color comment please)
If Tiger is so competitive, why doesnt he invite Phil to his tournament?????
I feel this is not just disrespect to Phil, but disrespect to the game. We all know that Tiger isn't intimidated by Phil, much less anyone.
Golf is a gentlemans game. Tiger always states he knows game this and respects it. Get over your "I hate my girlfriends ex-boyfriend, even though I don't know him" menatlity.
This is a little rant of mine, and I would like all opinions to be posted.

We'll I think some of it has to do with contracts within their own companies.
Why isn't Mickelson a golfer on Tiger's video game. Vijay and Retief are!? Callaway has products in the game.
I think that Tiger's event is something that Mickelson shys away from because he doesn't want to play in the event and Tiger knows this. Phil talks about spending time with his family, and this is family time right now. Tiger respects that.
If Phil was a single guy, with no kids, then he really wouldn't have much of an excuse.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal can play exhibitions. Half Grass, Half Clay surface match. Then why can't Tiger and Phil have a Battle at Bighorn type thing.
I think back when Jack and Arnie would play in events together, it was about playing. Now, with Tiger and Phil, it is more about technicalities within their contracts.

I absolutely agree with you....While Jack and Arnie had a noticeable dislike for each other, especially early in their careers, they found a way to co-exist and get along for the sake of both the game and the fans.....I could be wrong but I have a hard time believing Phil would turn Tiger down if he ever got an invite. If Phil is really "phony" as some like to put it, he certainly wouldn't risk tarnishing his image by turning Tiger down. The tourney is in Ca, and Phil could fly his jet there on a daily basis, much like he does when he plays the LA Open; and wouldn't lose too much "family" time.... I for one seriously doubt that Tiger has ever invited him....

top ten get automatic invite. You can bet that Mickelson's turned Tiger down over the years and so his spot is automatically assigned to other players, and Tiger is not playing this year...if he was concerned about Mickelson, this would have been the perfect year to invite him. So since it is apalling for Tiger not to invite him, is it respectful for Phil not to show? Frankly, it doesn't matter.

I must concede that Phil really could play in this event. He could get there with ease, he could bring the family. There must be something else we don't know, whether it is personal or techinical with contract stipulations. Insiders probably know why.

When phil decided not to play the 'korean masters' people don't think.
"OH GODZZ!!! PHIL MUST HATE KOREAN PEOPLEZZZ"
Point being he decides not to play a hell of alot of tournaments and this one may not be different to the others that he chooses not to play.

The top 12 players in the world ranking get an automatic invite whether tiger wants them or not. For example, do you think rory sabbatini would have been there last year if tiger had a choice? I was certainly surprised when he showed up on the range on thursday and i asked about the selection process later on in the day. The fact is that Phil doesnt want to go and he gets an invite every year. Its his loss, Sherwood Country Club is an amazing course and the tournamnet is competetive but has a light heartedness to it.The other four players get picked by Tiger and the TWF.

this is the problem with posts like these..folks don't even bother to look up the facts before starting something..
Phil, just doesn't wanna play in a made for Tiger event...although he was keen to show his public support for the ATT National in DC..the military was being honoured.

I'm not sure what the problem is.
Phil is automatically invited. Has nothing to do with whether or not Tiger wants him there.
In the past Phil has never played this time of year. It is his time off. He sees no reason to change that.
This one is a whole lot to do about nothing in my book.

agreed with the above posts... much ado about nothing.
you can honor and respect someone, but that doesn't mean you necessarily have to like them.

With respect to professional golfers' schedules and which events they choose, or choose not to play, that's completely up to them and frankly is none of our business. However, making public comments that are rude, hateful, and "embellished" is unacceptable.
I've never been compelled to join a fan club or provide feedback as a fan of any sport or player. However this incident has compelled me to take personal action, however trivial it may be to the big Tiger Woods machine. I've been a long-time fan of both Tiger and Phil. They are both remarkably talented players and have been great for the game of golf. However, the comments made by Steve Williams are beyond classless. He revealed himself as immature, hateful, and worst of all, a liar. Tiger Woods' only responsible choice of action is to fire him. I have emailed, posted comments, and written letters to the TW website, Steve Williams' website (
http://www.kiwicaddie.com/index.asp), the Chevron World Challenge website, and several of TW-endorsed companies (Nike, EA Sports, Golf Magazine). I will no longer purchase any Tiger Woods-endorsed products as long as Steve Williams remains his caddy.
I've done some searching on the internet and this will take some time and effort to research and execute, as Tiger Woods' endorsements are considerable. I've purchased more than my share of them over the years, sometimes unintentional, but many times intentionally because they are generally good products that have deserved the endorsement of a winner like Tiger. However, as long as he retains a loser like Steve Williams on his team, I will not support him with my retail dollars.

Its funny, a guy shares an (nasty) opinion in a national forum and he is defended as being allowed to speak freely. A guy shares his (thoughtful) opinion here, and a bunch of internet tough guys try and tear him a new one. Whether or not I agree with him, I respect him for taking a stand.
Can't anyone disagree civilly anymore? Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves. The only thing he did wrong was cross post - and since he is new it would have been nice to welcome him and politely explain that cross posting is frowned upon.
Considering how many defend (and how many applaud him for saying it) Stevie it isn't a surprise that manners are lacking.
If there isn't anything else to say about Phil's absence from the tournament, why not let this thread die a graceful death?

Calling the kettle black? Six guys attacking one for making an obvious breach of etiquette is no different than one guy attacking six.
We get your point, and this is not meant to be attack on you, but let the mods do their job. The more aggressive replies to DP's posting all over the place have been dealt with and DP is not exactly innocent himself.
Suffice to say, let's get the topic back on track or it probably will get closed.
