Pretty much golf season is over for the next 4-5 months in the Northeast. What's the cheapest / closest golf destination for long weekend golf escapes? Need cheap to afford multiple trips, and close enough so not too much travel time.

Weather-wise it's a crap shoot if you're looking for close and cheap.
I was at Sawgrass last January (didn't get to play golf, unfortunately) and the temps were in the upper 30's/low 40's and blustery. Guys were coming off the golf course with beat red, wind-burned faces and frozen hands.
I was in West Palm Beach, FL in Feb. '07 and the same thing happened. We were frozen.
The other places, like the Carolinas, are also close and relatively cheap- but you run into the same weather problems.
The only fortunate thing about those places is the cold weather usually doesn't last too long- both of those trips the temps returned to 65-75 the week after we left. So, like I said, it's a crap shoot.
Puerto Rico is a good trip- not too expensive (not cheap either) and it is only an hour further than Florida. Weather is beautiful all year round. Never played golf there, though.
