I've made my reservation for Torrey Pines South for late Dec. and will be my first time playing it. I carry my bag when I play but the course looks very hilly from all the pictures and TV. Has anyone walked the course? Suggest walking, pull cart, or ride?

PS It's cart path only.

In general the hills you see on TV only come into play on a couple of holes. Most of the course plays on bluffs overlooking the ocean. Walk if you can, it will give you more time to enjoy the views. One recommendation, if the rough is high, don't get greedy. Hit more than a seven iron out of that stuff and you are going to hurt your wrists if you're not careful. Have fun!!

I live here and have never plalyed torrey! lol, but I do walk it every year for the buick. Very long and the elevation changes will wear on you! I prefer to walk myself but man it would be tough to walk a full 18 on the south. OUCH!

Its a long walk but its not that great for elevation changes except for the 3rd, 12th and 13th. Rest are pretty gradual.

Point to note is to bring ur skycaddy or laser rangefinder. Too few sprinkler head yardages and no GPS if you rent their carts although I think they do rent them out.

Personally, I thought it was a pretty easy walk. Not too bad going from green to tee, and not too hilly.

definitely walk the course. usually the pace of play is not too fast anyways... so if you rent a cart, you'll be sitting in it most of the time. better to walk, and enjoy all of the scenery. cart path only also requires you to walk a bit anyways...

I live 5 minutes from Torrey, it is pretty tiring to walk, but man it is so much more special.

Bring your hoofer!

Unless you're a hopeless couch potato....be sure to walk! A totally different experience.

Thanks for all the input!

Steele Canyon looks nice. Ever play Aviara or Maderas?

Steele Canyon is nice, and designed by Gary Player. Also try Carlton Oaks a real challenge from the tips.

Played Maderas in January...still quite scarred from last year's firestorm. All the bridges were gone and some black spots with molten balls....But a nice course nonetheless. Be sure to check troongolf.com for discount vouchers.

Yes I have played Aviara (a while ago now) when I attended Kip Putterbaugh's golf school there.
It's really nice and the pro shop was great too...

I loved the fact that Steele Canyon has 27 holes great variety and a nice location too.
IMHO most courses could benefit from the 27 hole triple loop as opposed to just 18, this could mean that (with smarter tee times and good course management) clubs could make more money and accommodate more members and visitors alike.

If you play Steele Canyon, avoid the Meadow nine, its boring compared to the Ranch/Meadow nine.Carlton Oaks from the tips will definitely bloody your nose.

Definetly walk, I use a pull cart myself. Aviara is nice but pricy same at Maderas. If time permits you might also try Salt Creek and Mt. Woodson, both interesting tracks at reasonable rates.

Oops! Forgot to recommend Barona.

From a guy that probably should walk more often, I played and walked Torrey last December. I did not want to pay the cart fee which was like 30 dollars or something. It was not all that tough to walk except for the holes a previous poster had mentioned. Overall, great views, great course and every putt breaks towards the ocean. Have fun!

I'd walk.
