Anyone think these guys have something left in their tank. I think if DD played enough events he could get back there. DLIII just doesn't seem the same after the injury and we all know Daly is in LV more for the gambling than the golf. These vets all have talent and just want to see if anyone thinks they will win again.

I would love to say DD would be the first to win again, but in reality I think it'll have to be DL3. DD is still to prone to throwing a 78 or 80 in b/w 70 rounds. I know he's still very popular, but Daly can head to Europe and never come back.

DLIII is working like never before. Qualifying for the big events etc. My vote goes to him.
Even though i'd love to see Duval in the winning circle next year, i'm afraid it won't happen anytime soon. Seems like something snapped ...
John Daly ... please i'd like everybody to stop talking about him. He might be a great guy, played some nice golf in the past, but he has been given so much second and third and fourth and ... chances and screwed em all up.

I think its only a matter of time before duval wins a tournament again, I dont think we have seen the last of him.
Daly actually has been playing better after having that cyst removed from his ribs and he doen often play well (or atleast better than awful) in europe so i could see him picking up a W there.

DD imo. He's shown signs this year. He just needs to put together 4 solid rounds a few times, and get that confidence back.

I'd pick DL3 as having the best chance.. one of my favorite players ever and I hope he wins again. However.. both DD and DL3 both have good chances of picking up a win in '09. I'm not too sure if Daly can come back after his bad habits
Dr. Bombay
Oct 16 2008, 04:18 PM
DL3 light years ahead of the other two as far as chances to win in '09. matter of fact, I expect him to win more than once in '09. about every 5 years Davis rededicates himself and actually does some serious WORK, '09 is one of those years...typically they are productive years. ODDS...2:1
Daly has a slim chance to win. he still plays a fair number of events and can obviously catch lightning in a bottle now and then. chances of a win are very very low, but certainly greater than zero. ODDS...100:1
Duval has z-e-r-o chance to win, not sure why he's even mentioned here. he's not only not doing the work, he's basically given up. ODDS...X:X (no odds posted by house, but feel free to make an offer ;-)

Love III. Duval seems to have lost the magic and Daly doesn't want to put in the necessary effort. If Daly plays in Europe I guess that might improve his chances. How does the European Tour compare to the PGA Tour? Easier? Harder? Same?

Probably none of the three will win, but DL3 is light years ahead of the others in my book. He still has game and motivation, but the ankle injury has slowed him down. He should win a few more times in his career, whether 08 or otherwise.
I would love for Duval to overcome whatever is ailing his game, but I don't think he will ever win again. There is something missing there.
Daly is a number of years from even contending. He is struggling to even make cuts. He won in '04 which was his first win since '95. As usual, too much drama in his life to get the focus to contend, let alone win.

That may be true, but relative to Duval, what does it mean to be working harder than ever? I don't give any of the three much of a chance to win anytime soon. It's hard to win on tour, and all three of these guys have not put four good rounds together in the same week for a long, long time. Let's wait for some consistent top 10s before we start glowing over one of them to win.

What a dumb thing to say. You obviously don't follow golf too much. If you do, you would know that Duval plays about as much as he can. He claims that he's working hard on his game and he's been playing very well. He has also been saying that it's not if he'll win again, but when. But according to you, none of that is true.

I want to say Duval, because he's my favourite player. And he has shown flashes of his former self, the first three rounds of the British Open in horrid conditions being the best example. That, and he's a nice guy. Signed my Mizuno hat at the RTO before he teed off in the Pro-Am. And yes, I did apologize half-jokingly for it being a Mizuno hat and not NIKE. I wasn't thinking clearly that morning, as I knew I was going to try to meet him and should have worn my NIKE hat.
But if I had to pick one, I'd say DLIII.

From the quote I heard from DD, it means that he's working like he used to when he won all the time. I don't know what his work ethic was like back then, I just remember the results. I agree with what you posted, clearly, since I said the same thing in my original post. Whichever of them starts putting together 4 solid rounds the most, is going to be the one that wins first. No way it's Daly. DLIII, eh we'll see. He's not getting any younger. DD is only 36, and the British Open showed me that he's still got the game inside. Just a matter of letting it come out. If he can manage to put together 4 rounds and get a top 10, he'll be good to go imo.

and you may have believed it when the CEO of Wachovia said "the bank is in great shape for the long run and we intend to remain independent" -- and the CEO prob believed it too. but the facts indicate otherwise for WB and DD, despite what he "claims".
DD may believe he's working "as hard as ever" but the facts show otherwise. you don't have to go any further than taking a look at the sloppy physical condition he is in compared to the past to KNOW he's not working as hard as ever - period. not to mention the horrendous numbers he's been writing down on scorecards...

I think Duval is a nice guy and all, but I don't understand how anyone can think he is remotely close to winning a PGA event. How many years has it been now where people keep saying he's "just needs to put 4 good rounds together" or "he's almost there"? The truth is he's no where close to being there. And he can say how hard he's working until he's blue in the face, it doesn't really mean anything. We're talking about a guy who made 3 cuts out of 18 events this year, and has a stroke average above 74. Daly wins before Duval does.

I'm going with DL3 just because I find it more likely for him to put together 1 low round and 3 low enough rounds to win.
As I see DD right now, his short game is still awesome, but his tee game is just way too army golf. For a guy as talented as he is, what does it take to turn a 76 into a 68? All he needs to do it get to the dancefloor a little more expeditiously which isn't a quick fix . . . especially if you are trying to recapture a swing from years ago before injuries, etc . . . instead of building something new for his current body/health, etc.
As for JD . . . don't care enough to ponder his recent game.

1. DLIII-this guy could win at anytime, great talent, just needs to sharpen the putter a bit. I dont think he will win another major, but you never know, he could have a Hale Irwin/Ray Floyd/ 86 Nicklaus moment to cap his career.
2. Daly-when he gets hot he is hot, when he is cold he is cold, problem is he has been cold for 2 years. As many personal problems he has had recently who knows if he will ever be hot again, he as to get his head screwed on straight.
3. Duval- I wish he would make a real comeback, but I will very suprised if it happens, I just dont think his heart is in it. Prime example of how todays pros are wealthy and soft, literally with his waistline LOL, the drive is gone he really has nothing left to play for. To me I dont ever see someone like Duval makeing a comeback unless he figures out a way to squander his millions, and finds the need to make a real comeback.

I don't JD has a chance at winning again unless he goes full time to Europe and finds some control.
DLIII has been playing really well as of late and I've heard is looking to make Captain Couples President's Cup team. He's shown some flashes the last couple of event so who knows. It'll take a win to get him on the team.
DD is a strange scenario. He played really well at the British and outside of a poor Sunday he was in the hunt. Ever since he's not done much...he made the cut last weekend. I think he's improving, but how long it will take is a crap shoot. Although I will inject as others have pointed out that his physique is different from before his fall from grace...but that constant physical fitness that he put himself through he claims was the cause of a lot of his back problems. Whether that is true or not, we will never really know, but lord knows you don't have to be in great shape to play golf well.

100% Agreed!
Don't insult a class act like DL3. He is the ONE guy of these three (IMO) that has real integrity (not just showing up to pick up his check). I don't hold it against DD that he has been mailing it in for years now simply to honor his contractual obligations that pay him so well, to each his own and he certainly played well enough LONG ago to earn the contract. It is his right alone to choose how to "fulfill" them.
JD on the other hand is a bad joke, and as comical as DD's "hard work" and "dedication" are, neither he nor DL3 deserve to even be mentioned in the same sentence as that clown.

Unfortunately, he may not win before John Daly passes away. That is truly a shame. Everyman as pro golfer was a good mantle to carry. Unfortunately, he is no longer Everyman, IMO. Even Everyman deals with reality, and the reality for JD is not coincident with JD's "reality". I hope he can turn it around and prove me wrong.
DD appears to be the type of signing for Nike that some people predicted Tiger would be when he first signed: complacent and lacking motivation. I never liked The Man Behind The Oakleys very much, but it's still sad to see such a cliff-like fall from grace.

..was thinking DL3 but got to weigh in on DD (who I have always had an interesting relationship with fwiw-no details unless you know)... he is close, but the tour is a place where one semi-mediocre round (unless balanced by a (near) course record round or two) and the truck just runs you over. DD just hasn't been able to shake the poor round (by tour standards)... I know most of guys know this but they are beyond good out there... he's had a good day and I think he's top 10 going into saturday... I will tell you this and that's that he's one guy you gotta be worried about if and when he gets back to playing like we all think he can no matter who you are... he can take anyone down. Pro Golf really needs him and we wish all the best...Glad his life has sorted out nicely and great to see Nike and other stand by him! Just remember who took Frank's "best contact you made all year Duvall".. that's the kind of guy he is... helps to be financially secure but in his heart he is a warrior who I think will triumph again!
