1st things 1st....To Tandy Leather I go:
in a scrap basket, I bought a BUNCH of super thin tooling scrap leather. I bought enough for 10 of these for $8 bucks
I bought the clip hardware ..(spring loaded money clip) I can stamp and color fill that thing too!
Here in Austin, we have a shop that has hundreds of taxidermy mounts, cow hides, aligator hides and every other off the wall animal hides you could ever imagine. I bought two lizard hides for 4.99 ea...enough to do 4 of these clips.
I already have metal stamps (for golf clubs) and knives and such to begin this project.
1)I cut out the main leather piece the size I wanted the clip
2)Cut a piece of lizard hide and glued it to the back of the main leather piec minus the middle.
(first attempt I screwed up...You need to install the clip holder and fold the leather over THEN glue the lizard backing on the back while folded. It is too tight to close if you don't) I left extra lizard over the edge.
3)Cut two card holder pieces for each side and using my metal stamps that I use for clubs to stamp his name on one side. Using the "0" and the "V" and period..... I stamped a likeness of his favorite putter company above his name (don't worry.... I am not selling these)
4)My son is all about Puma, so using an exacto and a light touch, I cut a cat on the other side and using a burnisher, I beveled the edge slightly.
5)I applied a minute amount of contact cement on the edges of these and tacked them on each end
6)I took the clip to a Shoe Hospital near my home and the guy stiched the edges: $12
7)Timmed the edges and sanded the edges
8)burnished the edges
9)Stained the edges and used a sealer on the raw leather
I used a phillips bit and stamped some small stars on the metal spring loaded clip. Paint filled them and here she is:
TOTAL COST OF MATERIALS:
$22 and I have alot left over!
I made this first one for my son........I now will do one for myself, but I will make mine a tad larger.
