My wife and I are driving down to Jekyll Island, Georgia on the 20th of October for a Family Reunion and 3 days of golf. The Reunion and Golf Outing is Fri, Sat, and Sun. We're leaving Long Island, NY on Monday, with the hopes of finding a nice public course in close proximity to Interstate 95 in the Carolinas somewhere. Someplace with motel accomodations nearby and not too expensive. I'm paying a bundle for the Reunion/Golf on Jekyll Island, but we would like to get a couple of practice rounds in. I am not what you would call a wealthy man, (But we're both decent golfers, I play off a 10 and my wife plays off a 16). Can anybody recommend a course that would fall into this category? Thanks.

Where do you plan to stop? I know there are some great courses around Raleigh, NC and Richmond, VA, but I can't say I've ever played out that way. The Southern Pines community is about 30 mins off of I-95 just south of Raleigh. Great golfing with courses like Pinehurst and many more. I've played Pinehurst and another course out that way once and both courses were great.

I played Tobacco Road a few years ago in Sanford NC and had a great time there. Very interesting track IMO. Nothing like the stuff in California.

I've been lucky enough to play Pine Needles a few times. It might be a bit out of your way, but it well worth time. It is a beautiful Donald Ross course.

The Players Course at Wyboo and Wyboo Golf Club are inexpensive and located a quick trip off I-95 in South Carolina. Both fun, decent and NOT expensive at all.
PS: I love golfing at Jekyll. We go there for a week almost every year!
