TW: "I plan to watch the Ryder Cup this week, but I will not attend. U.S. captain Paul Azinger has my cell phone number and he or any U.S. player can call me anytime. If I can offer any assistance, I'm happy to help."

Ok, so maybe he is the best player in the world right now, but was anyone else kinda peeved by this comment? It just seems so arrogant.

come on, this is like that fake outrage that's all the rage with politicians these days. no wonder Tiger hates giving interviews and politicians never tell us the truth.

Are you serious?

You forgot the rest..."I doubt I can do much, since I can't play practice rounds and am not privy to their team chemistry. I also don't know who is playing well, who is injured, and have no feel for how the course is playing. But I'll be happy to offer my opinion. I wish the American team well and hope they can bring back the Cup."

I really don't see how that's arrogant?
mat562
It seems quite a reasonable statement to me.

Then why would he even say it?? Ok so basically the message is, "I know nothing of the team, how they are practicing, how the course is, how the players feel, but if you want to hear my sweet voice, you have the number."
Dizzub
furthest thing from arrogance, hes smart enough to understand that it would be a distraction to show up to the event and is trying to show he still supports his former teammates. what if he woulda said, no i dont care who wins as i have friends on both sides and would only watch if i was able to compete? i think if i was on the team id rather call tiger and bs about the competition then listen to someone like lou holtz who came to hang out with the team and pump them up.
rblmp32
I have no qualms with that comment whatsoever As the 2nd post mentions, it's no wonder Tiger is so guarded, we look at everything he says with a friggin electron microscope.

I think you are reading way too much into a simple statement. Tiger is basically saying that he knows he can't be much help, but he is more than willing to give whatever help he can. Its just a courtesy statement, nothing more, nothing less.

dear God I actually agree with Mat. Hopefully he will not be offended with someone of inferior intellect quoting his post. laugh.gif (hopefully this will be taken in jest...that is my post's intended meaning)

I really think Tiger was put in a akward spot by asking him if he was going to be there. He was not on the team, could not contribute, and it seems to me he did not want to take any attention from the guys who were there. If he had been there NBC would have constantly put the camera on him or asked him what he thought about this and that. I personally think he made a great choice in the way he handled it.
BDLz
Personally, I think it was really classy. If he had shown up in Kentucky, he would have been a major topic of conversation. He knew that, and didn't want to take anything away from the 12 guys who deserved all the attention.
Personally, I'm glad he didn't come to the matches because I would have had to listen to Johnny Miller and the rest of the commentators discuss how everything would be different if Tiger were in the mix. It was actually kind of refreshing for our broadcasters to not mention Tiger for 8 and a half hours of coverage.

Perhaps he was feeling a little "left out"? It must be hard for Tiger, with the Ryder Cup being the one victory he has never tasted. Great win for USA BTW. I don't think Tiger was being arrogant - he's not like that.

This is a stretch zrockstar. Come on, how can you interpret his comments as arrogant. He was trying to offer his support - qualified it by saying he might not have all the information that is available but he is more than willing to help if called upon.

I am sure that you are one of those individuals that said Tiger flinched when he hit a bad drive at Torrey Pines, but didn't flinch when he hit a good one.

You guys just kill me.

Actually he was on the winning team in 99.

Woods was trying to be nice to someone who stuck a microphone or tape recorder in his face. Why exactly was the question asked? I can't see how Woods says what he is reported to have said for any reason other than a stupid question being asked of him in the first place.

Kind of like Brad Pitt being asked about what could be done in Tibet when filmiing "7 Days in Tibet." Woods should have replied more along the lines of Pitt's response; "How the f*ck should I know? I'm just an actor!" Woods:"Um, what exactly do you think I would be able to do when I can't even practice?"

good call! speaking of this, they just released the official 2008 US Open highlight film and they show a good 5 or 6 clutch drives that Tiger striped, but where he winced or knelt down. that argument always broiled me.

He said this on his website so it was not a "tape recorder in his face" comment. What is the wide wide world of sports is wrong with what he said????????????

Some of the posts the past 3 days are leaving me absolutely dumbstruck.

Not me. With thousands and thousands of members, we're going to get a few dumb keyboard jockeys. Time to move on from this ridiculousness.
