Why did the US team need at least 14.5 pts to win, but Europe would have only needed 14 pts to claim another victory?

In the event of a draw, the holders retain the trophy.

If they had both earned 14 points it would have been a tie and the Euros would have "retained" the cup because there was no "winner".
