While watching the US Amateur this weekend, I noticed a lot of players with Titleist hats. What is the ruling regarding equipment sponsorship and amateurs status?
yuck
Equipment sponsorship is allowed. You can go to a manufacturers Website, like Titleist and see what the "requirements" are for them to consider giving an amateur "free stuff"
SJFP
from tileist.com:

If you are an Amateur, thank you for your interest in receiving product sponsorship from Titleist.
With the equipment rule being deleted from the rules of golf, juniors, amateurs and seniors can now receive equipment directly from golf manufacturers. Much like many of the professional sports teams where they have a salary cap, we as a golf manufacturer have a spending cap which limits us in the number of players who we can touch with free product. To maintain open-ended fairness in the targeting of players for free product we currently review their position on the GolfWeek Junior Rankings as well as the National Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings and make our decisions based on this data.
If you feel that you fall into this category we would encourage you to forward us a playing resume summarizing your competitive golf career to date for our review. To those players who are not highly placed on one of the above rankings we will monitor their progress with hopes of working with them at some point in the future. Please mail your resume to:
Acushnet Company
Attn: Tour Department

Fairhaven, MA 02719
If interested in potential sponsorship, we will contact you at our earliest convenience. Thank you for your consideration and interest in Acushnet Company and its products (Titleist, FootJoy, and Cobra).

I was wondering the same thing and now I know.

Make friends with the right person and you can probably get whatever you want. I'd bet that all of Peter Uihlein's close friends are decked out in Titleist gear.

I think in many of the top amateurs cases if they're good enough or play a big time college golf program then that stuff becomes available to them. Fowler probably has several Circle T's...had one at the US Open and a Squareback belly at the Am....not to mention a 909 and 907D4 before that. Throw in the proto F3-05 3wood and he has about $10,000 worth of clubs in what 5 sticks. If you're as good as some of these guys are then you're treated just like a pro.
