Hi all,

Is anyone able to suggest good courses in or around Costa Mesa CA?

I will be playing with friends who are average golfers, so the ideal would be nice scenery, good condition, but not too challenging (I want them to enjoy themselves!)

Thanks
Matt

Make a tee time at either El Dorado Park in Long Beach (20 min drive from Harbor Blvd. in the heart of Costa Mesa) or just play Costa Mesa CC. There are two course, Los Lagos and Mesa Linda. Mesa is shorter, but they are both wide open and very nice public tracks. Check it out.

Meadowlark GC in Huntington Beach is a nice muni with good facilities. It's short, just under 6000 yards but kind of charming. You can get a golf lesson from Tiger Woods' former coach John Anselmo who still teaches there.

A few questions

1) How far are you willing to drive.
2) What day will you be playing. If you are playing on a weekend do you want an 6 hour round or less?
3) What's the max you want to spend?

I ask only becuase you said you want your friends to enjoy themselves!

Thanks for the replies.

To answer your questions -

Willing to drive 30ish mins
We will play Wed, Thurs and Fri (probably a twilight rate on Thurs)
Happy to spend up to 100 for one round, perhaps 50 or 60 for the other two

Its about 30 mins or so from Costa Mesa but play Arroyo Trabuco in Mission Viejo. Awesome course and is under $100 (around $80 on weekdays).

Trust me its a awesome course for the money and probably one of the best values in the area. The scenery is great (tucked in the hills) and the course is not too tough. The only downside is that some of the holes have narrow fairways and you tend to lose some balls if not careful. Check the website, I'm from the area and its awesome place to play. I had a couple of visitors from Japan (avg golfers, play mostly for business) and they enjoyed the course far more than some of the other notable ones in the area (Strawberry farms, Black Gold, etc.). And in comparison, AT is a lot easier then the Strawberry farms, BG, etc.

Another good one is Oak Creek GC. Really pricey (~$150) but nice course and not too tough.

There so many courses around the OC area so I’m sure you'll have a blast.

Tustin ranch is not too far ...

Anyone played Coyote Hills GC?

Coyote Hills is a decent course, I think its slightly overpriced at normal rates though. Some good changes in elevation and nice views. It was in good shape a couple months ago when I played it.

Strawberry Farm isi close enough...

For the more expensive end, I would say you can't go wrong with Tustin Ranch, Oak Creek or Strawberry Farms. Probably a better value if you play twilight during the week.

I haven't played Arroyo but I want to! If you want something a bit closer with decent rates, Tijeras Creek is a nice course. I've taken friends here with no complaints. The back 9 is set in a canyon so there is a risk of losing some golf balls.

Coyote Hills is a challenging course because it's short and narrow - Target golf. I think it's a fun course, but I don't take my duffer friends here. If I have to, I bring my old/"experienced" golf balls for them to use so they don't feel like they wasted a new box.

Lagos and Meadowlark are nice as well, perhaps start here and build up to the more expensive places?

Otherwise 3 days of golf - so you really can't go wrong!!!

You have a lot of options.. i think all notable courses have been mentioned:
-Tustin Ranch
-Strawberry Farms
-Oak Creek
-Pelican Hill (if you want to spend some $$)
-Talega
-Arroyo Trabuco
-Tijeras Creek (good value)

I'd recommend playing any of these during twilight.. for best value.. prime time expect to pay over $100

Matt,

Go to www.greenskeeper.org and you'll be able to get firsthand reviews of all the courses in Orange County, LA County and Riverside County. These counties are all within a 30 minute drive of Costa Mesa (you might have to use the 241 Toll road to get to Riverside County in 30 minutes). They might be a little bit out of your range but, in Riverside County, Oak Quarry, Goose Creek, Eagle Glen and Trilogy are all pretty close to each other and fantastic courses with great views. I played Eagle Glen on Monday at 2:00 pm for $29.00 green fee and cart and finished in 4hrs. and 15 minutes.

Hope this helps,

You should go to www.c4tt.com
many choices and price ranges, etc.
Good Luck, there are many great courses around here.
