Just got my letter of acceptance to the US Senior Amateur Championship Sectional Qualifier! Really excited (as an old man can be) to be trying to qualify again, anyone else get theirs or playing at Kenwood? I received a letter with all tee times and names. Let me know as I will be playing a practice on the 26th (the day before)

Good luck to you! I took a lesson this morning at Shady Oaks which will be the host of this year's senior am. The course looks to be in great shape (it always is). I play out there 8-10 times a year. Play good in the sectional then come play on some lightening fast greens.

CRAP! the greens killed me last year! if they are any faster than Kenwood I will put a rubber insert (maybe styrofoam) on the front of my putter, the greens had to be running a 12 or so last year!

Congrats and Best of luck! One of my buddies is Mike Bell, the 2006 Senior Am winner and #1 ranked senior amateur for most of the past 3 years. He's amazing to play with. He's crooked as hell off the tee from time to time, but can hit some of the most incredible recovery shots you'll ever see. Even moreso, put him on the green and he nails putts from all over the place.
The thing I've noticed from playing with him and his buddies (also nationally ranked senior ams) is that you wouldn't see much difference between them and really good amateurs off the tee or on approach shots, but they can clean your clock with recovery, short game and putting. So, my advice is work on that area of your game over the next few weeks if that's a weak area!

I played in the Shady Oaks member-guest a couple of months ago and they had the greens running around 13 in the mornings and they seemed to get faster in the afternoon. Combine that with alot of wind and tons of undulation and, well, you can imagine it's some tough putting.
That said, it's a fair course that's very enjoyable to play. I plan to go out and watch some of the competition in September and hope you become one of the guys I'm watching. Good luck to you!

If you've ever played Kenwood before this year, you would definitely need to go back and play it again. It is not the same course. Some holes were just redesigned and I havent been out there yet this year but i heard it's really nice.

Hey Blade Man, I'll see you there, I'm playing too. I played a practice round on Friday at Kenwood, OMG, what a nice club. Got an extra 50k you could loan me, I wanna join. Shot a 75 from the tips, not bad but I'll have to do much better than that to have a chance. The reality of it is, I'm just along for the ride, just wanted to play Kenwood a couple of times, I really enjoyed it. The members and the employees were very accomodating, had a great time, looking forward to Wed., 10:30am tee time.

Just looked at the list and there is only one guy from Richmond, Ky there, that must be you Frankie. Wish I had checked earlier, I would have played a practice round with you but I already played. On Friday the fairways were very damp, no roll at all, made it very long. I didn't think the greens were all that bad, a couple of them have the potential to be real bears. Overall I think the course is very fair, it's in great condition and I'm betting they will be cutting and rolling the greens before Wed.. I would say that you have to be careful of a few of the holes because most of the course is pretty open, it luls you into a sense of comfort and ease and then it throws a really tight hole in there and you have to be accurate on your tee shot. Great course, watch out for No. 11, it could bite you in the butt if they put it all the way back and I'm sure they will. The green on that one and No. 10 could be tricky. Anyway, have fun, it's a great golf course and don't let all the Rolls Royce's, Bentleys and Lamborgini's in the parking lot intimidate you, I almost turned around and left, I think I'm going to rent a Mercedes for Wed. By the way, I did see Bill Cunningham there and I saw Mr. Linder's car as well, nice RR. Should be a fun day.

How did you do??
Okay, I shot 82 today at Kenwood CC in Cincinnati, and really I am pretty pleased with that, wind and rain (I hate playing in the rain!) had three bogeys on the first three holes with decent drives and birdied the fourth hole, man the greens were faster than what I am use to, made a lot of saves and had 13 putts on the front (0 putts on the 9th after a drop from the flower bed on the left of the green chipped long but on the fringe and used the putter to knock down a 10 footer!) did Meet a guy that was from Cincinnati and he had an 82 also! Great time and I think even with the 82 we finished in the top 10 or 15. So not a bad day playing golf! Of course I think it should have been a 74 or 75 because I did have the one three putt and missed several chances for bird! Had a ball out in the hazard on one of the par 5's and took a 7 (sh:t!) Thanks guys for the support and hope someone on this board made the cut!!
Thanks again for all the support and good wishes, yes I will be another year older in 09 but like Arnold said "I'll be back"!

Hey John maybe next year we can get together for that practice round! We both shot like crap but you are right about the staff and accommodations, they were giving me a hard time about my UK (university of Kentucky) shirt and hat! WE both need to be 10 or 12 strokes better to get that spot! But had a GREAT time. Ever get this way look me up! Free round on me at the Bull!

I know this is an old thread but thought I would update it instead of starting a new one, I have once again registered to play in the USGA Senior AM but this year I am going to play Cherry Blossom golf club in Georgetown, KY (a lot closer home!!) and a course I can play several times before the qualifier, reason I reopened this is to see who here is going to play and where. Let me know if you are play at CB and maybe we can do a practice round or two or three........
