Hello. I caddy at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey, the site of this year's Barclay's Classic. I stopped in to caddy today, but there wasn't much to do. Before I left, I signed up to caddy in the Pro-Am before the tournament.
What is this like?
I'm assuming you caddy for the Amateur? Anyone ever done it before? Have any info?
Thanks!

I've caddied for my dad at the John Deere Classic Pro Am for 4 years now. Nothing particularly special about it besides the pro you play with and the format of the game, best ball with 4 amateurs + pro, and the free powerades and powerbars on every hole.

So there WILL be a pro in the group at the least?

Yes, typical format is 4 amateurs plus one pro. I've been lucky enough to walk with Chris DiMarco and Stewart Cink before, hopefully you'll get a nice pro!
I wouldn't count on the amateur being better than a 10 hdcp, most of the players have more money than game, which is why they're in it.

My kid signed up last year to be a pro-am caddy at the LPGA Safeway Classic in Portland. He ended up looping four times (36 one day).
His experience with the pros ranged from fantastic (chatty, making jokes, signing balls for him, etc) to those who seemed to be there just because they had to be.
He never had a "bad" am. player in terms of how he was treated.......he was tipped very well after each round ($40-$60 per). Hi only complaint was that some of these guys carried WAY more stuff than necessary in their bags. He estimated one fella had four dozen balls in his bag.....ugh.
He's signed up again this year......but he also wants to see if he can get a gig for the week with a player. A lot of younger LPGA players don't have regular caddies and will pick up a local for the week.
Good luck!!

Thanks for the help guys! Yeah, I heard I'd be caddying a lot then. Sounds good, should be good money.

I did it for years growing up during the Colonial. Had both good and bad days, but the overall experience was great. Best pro I ever had in a pairing was Watson. He made it a point throughout that 6 hour round to talk with each and every member of the group, caddies and players alike. He had a child about my age and I had just started college. Almost 20 years later I can still remember the conversation very well. Just a truly genuine nice guy.
Have fun! Maybe you'll end up with a cool story you still like to share 20 years from now.
