I was looking at the Canadian Open today and a lot of the interviews and long shots used the whole widescreen HD screen. But a lot of the play around the green and closeups they put a large blurry border on either side of the picture (of course the Golf Channel HD was still clear).. It appeared that they had switched from 16:9 to 4:3. Is that what is going on in that they don't have many HD TV cameras?? If so they should scratch that blurry transparent border and just put black borders up. I found it really distracting to watch. Anyone have any ideas why the Golf Channel does that????

I also have direct tv and am seeing quite a few large black lines on all hd channels. What is the deal? Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so what should I do? Thanks...

The large blurry picture is when the signal is HD, but that specific shot is SD. Instead of the black bars, they just take the edges of the picture, move it out, and blur it. You see this alot on ABC when they show highlights of past events.

Sandy -
I noticed some blurry borders for the first time last night watching GC HD coverage of the Canadian Open. However, I think it was only when they were showing a portion of the '06 final round during the rain delay - the rest of the time the screen looked OK to me.
I have Comcast cable - which generally sux

It is a view from a standard definition camera. Instead of the usual black bars they blur out the sides as a poster previously mentioned

Today it has really messed up sound, I think they are just having overall problems.

Here's what it was . . .
The SD replay was put over the booth shot. The booth had a clear plastic cover over it that had raindrops on it.
The "blurry sides" were simply the rain-covered plastic cover.

I guess I was not clear enough. I have 3 or 4 horizontal thick black lines (that should not be there) on most hd channels. They are not constant, but appear quite frequently. Anyone know why? And how to fix this issue. Thanks...

ive seen the blurry edges on GC HD before and I hate it, so much so that I had the change it and watch in SD, its really distracting, standard black bars would be much better, even something like golf HD or something in the borders like ESPN does.

thats definitely not normal, but I have no solutions, never even seem anything like that before. Id definitely say its a localized problem, maybe even something with youre line or box, call the cable company.

Where are the black bars, and who is your provider?
Are you sure you're
1) have your cable or sat box tuned to a HD channel and
2) the cable or sat box is hooked up via component cables, DVI, or HDMI?

The bars appear horizontally throughout the picture. I have direct tv. Everything is hooked up and tvs on an hd channel. The lines come and go and definitely should not be there. Thanks again for any help...

Make sure you use a hdmi cable to make sure you get the best picture.
Espn uses ESPN HD on the side instead of blurring the edges.

My Dish audio has been bad on HD broadcasts...thought it was just me.

Do you only see this on Golf Channel HD broadcasts? Or it is HD in general?
If it's HD signals in general, you might be having scanning issues with your TV via whatever connection port (HDMI, Component, etc) that you're using.

It's a switch from HD to SD.
It appears to me that we (Comcast) intermittantly lose HD signals and the picture defaults down to SD, but perhaps it's a switch to an SD camera?

Hardly any roaming cameras are in HD for these 2nd tier events. Only the Masters and the big tourneys get the roaming HD mini-cams. Stable cameras behind greens are typically HD, the others are usually SD. Hence the boarders.
As for the black lines across the screen, try connecting the box to your TV via component cables instead of HDMI. If it's a problem with the output of the box or your signal, you'll see the same problem both ways. If it's a problem with your tv or the HDMI cable, the issue will go away when you switch cables.
