and decided to play golf would i be surrounded buy ian polter lookalikes

like would everyone be wearing pink pants with visors and thick white belts

would they all have pom pom headcovers

would they all be talking about the latest j lindenberg belt or the new hair gel that they put in their bleach blonde hair

just curious

would i stick out like a sore thumb if i had a baseball hat and khaki pants and a normal golf shirt on

seems like the fashion is so different but i wouldnt know cause ive never been there

If I took a trip to the USA would I be surrounded by Woody Austin lookalikes?

like would everyone be wearing hideous shirts and pants?

would they all use carts and none walking?

would they all be talking about their winchester gun or the latest in chewing tobacco?

just curious

would i stick out like a sore thumb for walking and wearing a decent shirt?

"seems like the fashion is so different but i wouldnt know cause ive never been there"

Seriously though, you are right that you will find those people overhere but I'm sure they're in the US as well.
You're really only talking about cliché's and that's only a small percentage of the general public (een the general golf public)
In Europe it is still an "elite" sport. It is getting better but it's not seen or known as well overhere as it is in the US or even the UK.
So a lot of golfers belong to that "elite" club and are still very traditional.
Altough there is a definate movement to younger golfers and a newer breed of golfers.

Oh and yes I do wear a white belt!
No offence intended !
jettasin00
Every time I play in Belgium they wear normal golf attire.

Most of my friends are European here in the PI. They wear basically the same clothes I wear. Nice shirt, nice pants/shorts, and a good pair of shoes.

I don't know if you started this thread as a joke or not. But it's not that much different over there.

Kids here (in the US) are dressing like some of those goofy Tour players...it's not just Europe and Australia.

You forgot to ask if you would be perceived as an Ugly American whilst about your European holiday.

Whenever I watch the Euro tour on TV my wife always picks up on it because she says the players tend to look more fashionable and fit.

Never seen any other Belgians on this board before, and now i spot two biggrin.gif

As far as i'm concerned guys like Poulter are clowns. There's a fine line between smart dressing and borderline costume parties. The look you described (kahki pants, polo shirt) is pretty much the same over here.
The main difference might be brands like Galvin Green which (or so i understand) are difficult to come by in the states.

It is indeed still seen as an elite sport. Clubs make a lot of effort to get rid of this stigma, for example initiations and welcome packages have been very popular the past few years. But there is also a shortage of clubs. I played the biggest club in Antwerp a few weeks ago, Cleydael, and members were complaining about the amount of members. Weekend competitions spread over 2 days, so no tee times for members who want to play casually. Tee times for members have to be booked more than 1 week in advance, if they sell those times as business packages you're screwed basically and loose your tee time.
I do hope more courses will be build in the future. Club memberships have been rising over te last few years, so the shortage might drive the prices up

BTW: the Lindeberg shirts are very comfy and very well made. I have a plain white one and a plain navy blue one, so nothing special.

I can comment from the states about the golf style. I'm one of the So called "Clowns" you speak of, I wear nothing but J Lindeberg and sub seventy pants which are normally bright and I like the colored belts but always wear the white or black solid shirts. For me It's not about the shock factor but the fact of I think the bright color are great. Also I prefer looking professional every time I step on the course and for this fact most every top level golfer in the state knows and remembers who I am. Again this is my point of view and others maybe are in it just for the shock factor and so be it but I enjoy people knowing who I am @ the tournaments.

I do get the local high school kids and older guys that come to play @ my Club and try to make some type of negitive comment about my attire. normal comment would be " Look at this wantabe I bet it sucks" Then the Club pro normally steps in and explains I'm a scrach golfer and Top 3 in all of the 385 members.... Normally shuts them up really fast:)

So my point is everyone has a different style, which makes them who they are. I would just suggest you respect it and enjoy the great game and if traveling to a different country I would not change my attire fit them.

Does he (the club pro) just run around the course looking for people who are making fun of you? Does he have time for anything else?

I've got nothing against your style of clothing. It's not my style, but the world would be quite dull should everyone's style be the same. Maybe i shouldn't have generalized it that much, but I was referring mainly to Poulter who takes it over the top once in a while (in addition to his attitude). That's what i wanted to say with "a fine line".

My GF watches that fashion channel almost everyday. For some reason that fashion stuff is serious business. People go back and forth on some of the stupidest things on that channel.

Europe's a big place so it depends on where you go to mate.

Most of the Scandinavian countries are pretty clued up when it comes to fashion on the fairways. Plenty of J Lindeberg and Peak Performance up there.

The U.K and the rest of Europe seems to be a bit of a mix. Online shops like Funky Golf and Trendy Golf seem to be doing very well for themselves and publications like GolfPunk always have an eye on the latest styles but there's still plenty of people sporting the Ashworth/Dockers look.

You'll only look out of place if you wear a t-shirt saying I love (fill in the name of your State here), or you go up to people asking where the nearest large fast food chain is biggrin.gif

Warning - This post contains light hearted banter and a couple of generalizations!
jettasin00
I usually wear Adidas polo shirts and shorts since its been warm here. I need to get some pants for when I go back to the states in a few months.
DaveyH
Theres a great mix in Britain people wear whatever they want.

Pretty much the same as any other country/Kingdom.

LOL biggrin.gif biggrin.gif See, I did get one out of two right!
No, it's good that we all like something different as stated before, it would be a sad world if we did !

And what do you mean you've never seen any Belgians on here before!?!
I have to admit it's the first thread were there are two at the same time LOL
