For some players, a single word is fine...scratch...bogey...hustler...single digit...bandit...weekend hack...but for the sake of discussion, let's add some depth to a single word.

Write your movie character sketch, of you the golfer.

If you don't want to write yourself as a sketch, I can tell what your golf profile is, maybe, by how you answer some questions:

"Do you play?"

"Are you good?"

"Do you have a handicap?"

"Ever want to turn pro?"

"Do you know a lot about golf?"

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"

(there is a subtext to this question, but if I give it away, the discussion won't work. You are welcome to guess though.)

"Do you play?"
Not as much as I'd like to.

"Are you good?"
I think I can hold my own.

"Do you have a handicap?"
I carry an index around 4

"Ever want to turn pro?"
Can't say i've never thought about it.

"Do you know a lot about golf?"
I work in the industry, so it's basically my job. I certainly don't have the knowledge of some of the members here.

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
I take it pretty serious. I play some local amateur tournaments. I have played in some big money games, but most of the time it's a $5 nassau with my buddies.

Okay, I'll bite...

(A hospital hallway, at some crazy late hour)

I'm standing in the hall, practicing my swing using my stethoscope as a club.

Passerby colleague - "Hitting the course this weekend?"
Me "Does a bear s**t in the woods?"
PC "Touche. We need to play sometime"
Me "Hmm, yeah, sounds good."
PC "What are you shooting these days?"
Me "Oh, well, about a 12...lost a couple shots moving back from Las Vegas this past fall."
PC "12? That's pretty goo--"
Me "--Okay, maybe more like a 15, or 17, okay fine 17.9 USGA, buy that?"
PC "If you'd stop trying to save lives, maybe you could go pro...hah!"
Me "Never in a million--"
PC "I was joking?"
Me "Not funny. I picked up some new sticks...I'll be back to a 14, which I really was! Then after that...who knows?"
PC "Sure, whatever. I just need to break 90. Got any tips?"
Me "They say, those that can't do, teach. Man, if I could play as well as I knew the game..."
PC "Hah! Hack. I'll take you on."
Me "I'll wager on that, and gladly take your money too."
PC "Yeah, well, we'll see."

I hope that gets things started!

"Do you play?"
I do play, I play as often as I can due to all of the free time I have right now.
"Are you good?"
HA! I am horrible
"Do you have a handicap?"
Probably a triple digit handicap. I haven't played a home course enough to develop a handicap.
"Ever want to turn pro?"
It would be fun, but I don't think it would ever happen.
"Do you know a lot about golf?"
I watch, but don't know very much.
"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
I am all about having fun and am about improving my own game when I play.
Baycal92510
"Do you play?"
Ya I play but like many not as much as I would like

"Are you good?"
I'm pretty good...but good enough to know i'm not that great

"Do you have a handicap?"
Playing to a 2.6 as of yesterday

"Ever want to turn pro?"
Not play on tour, but my dream is to become a pga pro and work mainly with the first tee program

"Do you know a lot about golf?"
Not as much as I would like but enough to where most players come ask me for rulings

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
I take it very seriously. I made a commitment to make this my job and play that way

(there is a subtext to this question, but if I give it away, the discussion won't work. You are welcome to guess though.)

BluesDrive
"Do you play?"
Not enough.
"Are you good?"
With my mid-low irons.
"Do you have a handicap?"
I never keep score long enough to have one.
"Ever want to turn pro?"
Of course
"Do you know a lot about golf?"
Yup, you put the ball in the hole without touching it.
"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
I gamble at the driving range, does that count?

My place in the golf world...

Locked in the scoring trailer with Natalie Gulbis.

"Do you play?"

Yes. Pretty regularly.

"Are you good?"

Not bad.

"Do you have a handicap?"

Yes. I've been off scratch or thereabouts since 1989.

"Ever want to turn pro?"

Thought about it in my late teens, but was realistic enough (and saw a few mates scratching about on mini tours and suchlike) to realise I was never going to make much money as a playing pro.

"Do you know a lot about golf?"

A fair bit. WITBs of players from 1986 to about 1998 is my speciality, together with other obscure, golf-related trivia.

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"

I used to play decent level amateur golf and competed at all sorts of levels, but no longer sadly. Modesty (and the Club Secretary) prevent me from revealing any gambling habits on-course.

If a movie is made of my life, I'd like Corey Feldman as the young me; and Richard Gere as the 'old' me.

Looking out at the fairway, still wet with dew, breathing in the heady scent of fresh mowed grass, I caught a hint of cigar smoke, could it be a Fuente Hemingway? Nah, probably a Phillies blunt.

The practice green was beginning to fill with golfers, each dropping a few balls - those too late to claim a cup, stroking their putts to an imaginary target, wiping the face of their beloved putters with a damp towel after each attempt.

In the distance you could hear the metallic ping of driver meeting golf ball at the practice range. Long gone was the pleasant "crack" that would accompany the swing of a well struck persimmon wood.

Most of us were nervously fiddling with our clubs, swinging half wedges at an imaginary golf ball, or practicing our chipping stroke.

Many were walking around shaking hands with everyone, like the course mayor. Others just kept to themselves, "getting into the zone."

Sure there were different levels of ability, as we waited on the starter's call, but we each shared one common thought "I'm just glad to be here."

I guess that is my place in golf - I'm just glad to be here.

"Do you play?"
Yes, why else would I be on this forum

"Are you good?"
I am pretty solid

"Do you have a handicap?"
Yes, for the first time in 8 years. Playing to a 4.

"Ever want to turn pro?"
Of course, but don't think it will happen.

"Do you know a lot about golf?"
I won't find many people my age(36) that know more. Been playing since 5, and followed the sport seriously at an early age.

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
Yes, I am getting back to playing some tournaments this year. I never turn down action. Used to gamble with my Dad's group when I was 12-14. In HS practice rounds always had many on them.
Fuzzy Taylormade
"Do you play?"
Almost everday

"Are you good?"
For only playing 5 years? Yes

"Do you have a handicap?"
7.2-ish, getting down there, 78 is hard to break dang it!

"Ever want to turn pro?"
The plan of the future

"Do you know a lot about golf?"
Err......yes...

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
Just your usual Game and Skins on Men's Night. I also play a little (and win a lot) of 5-5-5 games! biggrin.gif
emc
Do you play?"
Yup, most free days

"Are you good?"
Not great, not bad.

"Do you have a handicap?"
Yes, 6.2 or 2.5 depending on which system is used

"Ever want to turn pro?"
Thought about it, but realised I'm not good

"Do you know a lot about golf?"
I know more than most, but a lot less than some

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
All 3, and worryingly it's the 3rd I enjoy most of all. Nothing like needing an up and down from a bunker with only 4 iron to save a tenner to get the pulses racing biggrin.gif
nocam1334
"Do you play?" Yes.

"Are you good?" Good driver, really good chipper, pretty average everywhere else.

"Do you have a handicap?" Not officially. I fluctuate between 4 and 8.

"Ever want to turn pro?" Not anymore, thought about it when I was younger, though. I'd just love to qualify for a U.S. Open or Masters one time though.

"Do you know a lot about golf?" Yes

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?" All of the above. Not much of a gambler, I just like the beat the living #%$^ out of my partners. I enjoy hitting my drives 60 yds by them and watching them try to hit a wood into the green while I hit my wedge. (Need to find some better partners)
LP28
"Do you play?"
Yes, but w/ two kids I play a lot less than I used too!!

"Are you good?"
Sometimes, but I'm inconsistent(children are the BEST but they do crazy things to your golf game!!)

"Do you have a handicap?"
Yes - right now I am a 4

"Ever want to turn pro?"
No.....and take the fun out of the game!!

"Do you know a lot about golf?"
I think so.

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
Yes, play in as many tournaments as I can, and I like to have some kind of money on the line when I step on the course.

(there is a subtext to this question, but if I give it away, the discussion won't work. You are welcome to guess though.)

Alright Blues, where's this going?
jcrew
"Do you play?"
Every single day during the summer. Anywhere from 9-36 holes.

"Are you good?"
I'm not too bad and getting continuously better. My ball striking is not great but I'm great with my wedges.

"Do you have a handicap?"
10.1 Honestly I'm on the verge of being consistently at or under 80. I play lots of 9 hole rounds so I've had many rounds under 40 (38-39) but then I'll have a few right over 40 and the handicap system combines them and I end up with low 80's.

"Ever want to turn pro?"
Not really. I want to play college though. Just d3 or somewhere that isn't amazing at golf. Academics is by far my priority though so we'll see how it works out.

"Do you know a lot about golf?"
I know a lot more than the average golfer. I spend a lot of times on these forums so I know a good deal about equipment and I am constantly around my golf teacher and helping teach younger kids so I have a good general handle on the golf swing and short game swings/strokes.

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
I take it seriously. I'm in a couple smaller junior tours and I'm trying to play in college. I don't gamble anything big. A dollar a hole. Lunch for the better score on 9. Closest to the 100 yard marker for a dollar. etc. Just small fun bets with friends.
daughterscameron
"Do you play?"
When I can. Married and kids can put a damper on that!!

"Are you good?"
1 handicap in a state that has about a 4 month(it seems) golf season. I'm pretty happy.

"Do you have a handicap?"
YEAH!!! Drinking too much on the course!

"Ever want to turn pro?"
I passed my PAT a few years ago. But, that was "for the competition". crazy.gif . Sooo probably not.
"Do you know a lot about golf?"
For the amount, that my single digit handi. golf buddies know. I'm a genius. einstein.gif

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
Every time I step on the course. (I wouldn't have it any different, a little wager
never hurt anyone). drinks.gif

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?" yes...yes...yes
ezra76

"Do you play?"

Couple times a week

"Are you good?"

Relative to competition but in the grand scheme, no.

"Do you have a handicap?"

yes, 12.4

"Ever want to turn pro?"

I'm alread a professional at something else, unfortunately it pays less and isn't nearly as much fun.

"Do you know a lot about golf?"

Again, relative I guess. I do spend a lot of time watching, reading and forums.

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"

Semi-serious. I'd like to get into competing next year. It's more like my #1 hobby/interest. I try not to take it too seriously and forget it's just a game/sport I'm only halfway decent at.
pingman360
"Do you play?"

Swingtheclub
Do you play?" twice a week usually Thursdays and Sundays

"Are you good?" all things considered good ball striker horrible short game getting old though

"Do you have a handicap?" 4 handicap considering I never practice am almost 60 and average almost 35 putts around not bad ( I was scratch or a plus for years you get old)

"Ever want to turn pro?" been there done that but never played the tour

"Do you know a lot about golf?" I know a little about a lot of parts of golf but not as much as I used too

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?" When I play I am dead serious I live for it I have always gambled at times for a lot of money But when I play I never think about the bets no more than I think about the results when I am in a tournament I think only of the shot in front of me.

Look up Golf in the dictionary theres my picture Its my only passion
Blues Golfer
Way better than I imagined. I really want to thank those that took the time to answer.

The point of asking who you are as a golfer, was to get an answer for a question that's been nagging me for over a year.

Most of your answers, were my answers too, give or take.

Do you play?"
A lot, but not as much as I'd like. Way more than my wife would like, I'd like to add.

"Are you good?"
Compared to who? Compared to a "typical" Sunday guy, I'm very good.
Compared to anyone on the Nationwide, I'm lowgrade dogmeat. And considering
how young I started, I should be better than I am.

"Do you have a handicap?"
I'm a seven, most of you who answered are better than I am. By the way, it's no accident that self-confident golfers answered.

"Ever want to turn pro?"
Since I was a kid, but as much as I wanted it, my Dad was more interested
in my sister's game. She was better, but wanted it less than I did.

"Do you know a lot about golf?"
Yes, some of it useful, some of it not. But I love studying the game.

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"

Now here's the important part. I do take it seriously. For something that
I don't do for a living, I take it seriously on a scale that would
shock even the people who hang out here.

Why? Why do I take it so, so, seriously?
The truth is probably that I want a do-over. I want my youth
back so I can become the golfer I never became. I could tell you
the whole sob story, but that's all it is, whining.

I'm living out my midlife crisis on the freaking golf course. I'm working at the game harder than I ever have, trying to rescue some part of my aspirations in golf.

The good news is, I'm succeeding. I've improved my game now to the point
where I'm as good or better than I was at 15. And I'm determined to get better still,
and I'm racing birthdays.

But since I can't have a do over, there's got to be a point, a reason,
to be spending my time, money, and happiness to achieve something
with my game. But what is, something?

"Be the best golfer I could become" is not a goal in golf, it's suicide,
and Tiger proved it. He won the hardest tournament there is to win, with a messed
up knee and a broken leg, and I promise you that if you asked him if he played
the best he could have, he'd say no. My guess is he would say "it was my
greatest victory, but it's not the best I can play."

So the last questions really, truly the last, as in the last questions
worth asking, I'm asking.

"where do you rate in the golf world?" and

"Are you trying to accomplish a goal in golf, or in life, or in your case is that the same question?

Matt727
"Do you play?"
yessir..everyday..not right now cause i hurt my wrist so im bascially going crazy but ya
"Are you good?"
ya know, ive been told i am by many people but on my standards i suck because in tournaments ive only shot a handful of good rounds by my standards
"Do you have a handicap?"
2.6
"Ever want to turn pro?"
thats the goal
"Do you know a lot about golf?"
i think i do
"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
seriously, compete..junior tourneys, small money games, u kno i keep it real

i want to try to get as much tourney experience as a kid..16..now going to be #1 or 2 on the high school team this year so that should be some good pressure...anyways as long as i keep practicing like i am i should be able to break par for the first time soon after i get back from being hurt because the three days before i got hurt i shot 75 76 73 and that was playing with a sore wrist so im hoping for the best and we will seee what happens
DefConOne
At 53 I have been playing steadily for three years. Good short game. Not very long off the tee. I keep grinding, but work more on having fun. My game is what it is and I see increments of improvement. I have to be patient, because for every two steps forward I take one back...or sometimes vice versa. I consistently shoot in the mid-80s. Occasionally break 80...and occasionally hit 90.

Golf is an riddle, wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma (to paraphrase Winston Churchill).
Golfer827
"Do you play?"
As with the Norms, yeah. However, not as much as I'd like due to life being life.

"Are you good?"
Eh... depends on what you mean by that. With the wedges? I'm cool, Irons? Decent, Woods? It's getting better, Putter? Suckage

"Do you have a handicap?"
Nah, haven't accumulated enough scores for one this year, I guess I'm a 18-22 handi.

"Ever want to turn pro?"
I've thought about it, but realized I'd be making one of the biggest mistakes of my life

"Do you know a lot about golf?"
In all honesty? No

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
I take it serious to an extent, but I won't be all militaristic about it. Eventually I want to do tourneys and such but need to play more to do it. Never gambled on it, though.
philfan316
"Do you play?"

I play everyday, usually 36.

"Are you good?"

Of course I am, what the hell kind of question is that?

"Do you have a handicap?"

I refuse to be handicapped.

"Ever want to turn pro?"

The PGA Tour won't let me play because I am too good and Nike has paid me off to stay away.

"Do you know a lot about golf?"

I really know nothing about the rules per se, but I know to find courses on my GPS.

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"

Yes, I take it as seriously as a heartattack. I compete with the course and I usually win. I gamble on Tiger Woods in the majors and if I was able to play I would gamble on myself.

Titleist1455
"Do you play?"
yes, but would obviously like to play more. play maybe 1 time a week

"Are you good?"
pretty good, but don't get to play enough to ever get much better

"Do you have a handicap?"
index is currently 1.9

"Ever want to turn pro?"
in my dreams (aka, no)

"Do you know a lot about golf?"
i probably know TOO much about golf. whether it's watching it on TV, these types of forums, golf equipment, golf clothing/shoes, etc. i'm kind of a golf nerd.

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
no. i've only played in 1 amateur tournament. i play for fun and to try to get better. i know i'll never be great, i just want to get where i can shoot 70-75 (at worst) every time i play. unfortunately i still throw in my 83 clunker round.
Stekman
"Do you play?"
I like to think that I do. Hit the course 1-3 times a week. Driving range every weekend. Less now with my MCL injury.

"Are you good?"
Not yet. Only been playing for 8 months.

"Do you have a handicap?"
Haven't taken the time to calculate yet.

"Ever want to turn pro?"
Not really.

"Do you know a lot about golf?"
Not as much as I would like to.

"Do you take it seriously, or compete, or gamble on it?"
I take it seriously, compete in the friendly workforce scrambles, and bet with 19th hole drinks.
