I'm not sure what a fortune is, but Centennial is right there....It'll cost around $125ish (I think, been a few years since I've played it). There's also Beekman (which I think is public) which is in Hopewell Junction - about 20 minutes up I-84. Also the Links at Unionvale wouldn't be too far and neither would Casperkill....Centennial is the only one of those that I've played, but I think Casperkill and Unionvale are both supposed to be pretty decent.

Yes, AIG did sell Morefar, but I have not heard anything to the effect that Morefar is public. I played there last year and it definitely was not public. I doubt anything has changed since.
If you're playing weekend morning, then Centennial is $135. Links at Union Vale is a very nice course and is $89 until 2:00 pm (can walk for $73 before 7 and after 10). Silo Ridge would also be a viable option - it's a straight shot up rt. 22 in Amenia, NY; about 30 minutes north of Brewster; it's a nice course, but not as good as Links at Union Vale. On the less expensive side, you can try Carvel, which is up the Taconic (about 35 minutes north of 84). I haven't been there in years, but it used to be a decent value. There are tons of others in the area, but many are difficult to get weekend tee times. You should be able to get out on the above-mentioned courses.
PM me if you want more detailed info. I live in the area and Centennial is my home course (have a season pass there).

The city course in Ridgefield is not bad. Usually in good condition, the two nines are totally different as they have different designers. Reasonably priced, it is a good fun course to play and the staff is very nice.
One town over in Danbury, Richter Park is a better course with great greens for a muni. For out of town visitors, the prices are pretty steep, but it is worth trying if you are in town. Note - getting a weekend tee time a Richter can be a b'tch.
Having played both (and no longer entitled the Danbury resident rates), I tend to favor the Ridgefield experience.
As for Union Vale, I really enjoyed it.

Centennial would be your best choice. Links@Unionvale is a distant second.

I'm not sure that Centennial fits your description of not costing a fortune, but if you do decide to play there, I would highly, highly recommend that you play the Lakes-Fairways combo and avoid the Meadows nine.
Another area option would be Putnam National.
http://www.putnamnational.com/And I strongly second the Richter Park and Ridgefield suggestions. Just make sure you have *good* directions (or GPS) if you decide to go to Ridgefield. Richter Park is far and away the better and more challenging course, but I can understand why the preceding poster prefers Ridgefield overall -- it's just a little more serene and all but a couple of holes have a ton of character.

Hudson Hills is I would guess about 1/2 hour and change from Brewster? They have a $40 twilight special.
