I know that it is natural for the previous generation to hold their idol in high regard and be well, not as friendly to the new guy. This aplies to not just sports but pretty much everything. And truth be told, I feel it happening to myself when I say "what kind of junk passes for music these days".
I am aware that when Jack was first coming around, some Palmer fans did not care to much for him. I would like to hear from those of you who have seen the sort of thing we see with Tiger. I assume that if we took a poll of people who think that Tiger is God's gift to golf and those who think Tiger is overhyped and think Jack or Hogan are the best, it would pretty much be split down the line according to age.
I am really interested in hearing from people who were young when Jack came around and for whom he became their idol and the reactions you remember from your elders or from people who just could not stand him as well as how you and the other Jack fans might counter punch with.
Likewise, those of you who revered Hogan or Palmer and didn't care for Jack and whether or not you finally came around to him and said "I guess he's okay". And do you recall the older generation saying that they were overrated and why/how.
Any little anecdote would be fun to hear about.

I'm 32, but a huge Hogan fan. I like the King, but I'm not a Jack fan. Personally I think Tiger is a bit of a jerk and is quick to curse and slam clubs around on camera when he knows 1,000,000 kids are watching. Tiger is also about the most boring interview of all time (so was Hogan though). That being said, modern equipment etc. aside Tiger's talent and mental toughness is far and away the best of all time.
By the way I think he was milking the knee for the cameras.

Grew up watching Jack, still have that damn left heel raise that I can't get rid of.
I started watching in the 70's and he was always in the hunt in big events or so it seemed from a kids perspective.
I remember him talking about the greats of the game and how they paved the way for him and others to play for a living.
I remember an interview where he said if he knew that more than 50% of shots were from 100 yds and in he would have practiced more on his short game but obviously he really didn't need to.
I lost a little bit of respect for him & Arnold with the Casey Martin affair but still ranks as the greatest until Tiger passes him by.
Was he an idol? No, I seemed to watch Jan Stephenson more than I watched Jack

I don't really think he was "milking it" for the cameras either, but I don't understand why he wouldn't discuss the knee at all in interviews. Don't know if it was just something he didn't want to talk about, or perhaps his "handlers" (ie. agent/publicist) told him not to discuss it w/ the media. That little wry smile he gave after anyone mentioned the knee was sort of suspicious.

I thought he was milking it as well and I don't hate Tiger. Rate him as in the top 10 of all professional athletes of all time.
I've had 4 knee operations (3 ligament & meniscus repairs (right knee) & 1 scope(clean out the left knee). I was working the next day after the scope and playing hockey a week later. I could play after the scope but believe me when I hurt my back I was not able to even attempt a golf swing.

I've had a couple of major knee surguries and still have alot of problems. No cartilage in one knee, lots of "gravel" in the other. At a relatively young age, I couldn't really consider walking 18 holes and playing golf. Multiple days of golf, it just gets worse.
That all said, I didn't see Tiger limping much during his 5th round. In fact, it appeared that the knee didn't bother him at all. Wonder if there was a needle mark anywhere? I used to drain mine before football games and it caused alot more harm than good over time.

How can I be a hater if I said he is the most talented golfer of all time?
He was milking it!
