The poor guy should get some sort of exemption for his amazing performance. Rocco battled the best and the world and possibly the best ever for 90 holes in the US Open.
ezra76
I agree... and he should make the Ryder Cup over Kenny Perry all day long as well. wink.gif
DemolitionMan
Top 15 and ties get full exemption for next year.
spinningwedge
Facing down Tiger didn't help Bob May too much, or Ed Fiori for that matter...

Good luck to Rocco though. Fantastic performance

One performance does not make you a great pick for the Ryder Cup. IMHO, Kenny has to continue his good play too. That actually goes for all of them. You could conceivablly have an entire team that qualified on points early on but at the time of the event can't hit it out of their own way. IMHO, the largest emphasis should be on the events leading right up to the actual Ryder Cup itself. I recognize the current year's point values are more heavily weighted for qualification but they should do the same for the events as they get closer and closer to the Cup itself.

Rocco is automatically in next year's Open due to his top 15.

The real key is his world ranking jumped over 100 spots into the top 50. That will get him into more invitational tournaments and into the World Golf Championships if he keeps it below 64 (for the match play).

And you have to believe the sponsor's would love to have Rocco come tee it up at their event.

Rocco should make the Ryder Cup - his shot making today and over the weekend was just dazzling!

I predict that Rocco will finish the year strong! He's not Paul Goydos.

There is a real possibility that Tiger may miss the Ryder Cup to rest his knee and Rocco should wear the red shirt like he did today during the play off to take Tiger's place, and if Tiger does play, Rocco should be paired with him. Zinger, are you listening? biggrin.gif

all the Rocco fans come out of the wood work after his amazing showing.. bleh!
gators77
If you're from Pittsburgh then you've always been rooting for him....Watch and see him/Goydos are going to be the next Daly-type figure.

meaning they will be fan favorites because fans relate
golferallan
so they aren't going far in golf then? Or i am guessing ur saying fan favorites but hopefully not Daly like because of his bad times right now

Not really a "Rocco Fan" but I was certainly rooting for him today and he really put forth an inspirational performance. It's hard not to like a guy who was just happy to be there on one of the game's biggest stages and damn near walked away w/ the trophy. Seems like a hell of a guy and I wish him all the best. As far as your post...bleh!

NOT TRUE, the guys has a lot of fans, but he doesn't play, or they don't show him as much as we would like.
Swingtheclub
I believe he will be exempt on tour for a year and exempt into the British and PGA

I think he gets a Masters invite next year (I started a thread on this in Senior Talk)

He is now 15th in Ryder cup points so he can play his way on (Kenny Perry is 7th and probably a lock)

So anyway Rocco gets lots of opportunitys and I think he will make the most of them.

He would be awesome on the Ryder Cup
Tenementrock
I think Mediate should've earned himself an invite to the Tiger World, er Target World Challenge.

Yeah bleh,,,,,, everybody on the TIGER WOODS band wagon. Knee problems or none. He sprayed the ball everywhere this week. Tee to green Rocco was much better. If Tigers putter does not show up,,,, he does not make the top 3 pages of the leader board. He is the best pressure putter the game has ever seen.

I like in your signature too,,,,, you make your own luck on the golf course...... Guess thats why Tiger hit it 80 yards right sat on the par 5 and should have been dead,,,,, gets relief from a TV tower and drops in trampled down rough. Made his own luck. Made eagle. And should have made 5 at best if it is in the junk.

Great performance indeed, but not Ryder Cup team worthy. Why? 7 missed putts inside 5 feet. There'll be plenty of that at Valhalla.
tbowles411
He's got to win to be in the Ryder Cup IMO, but he won't need to Monday qualify too many more times this year. This will certainly help is cause.

I don't think he gets an exemption into the British and PGA - exemptions only go to past winners, winners of other majors, world rankings, money list, and then it is qualifiers.

He does get Masters though, top 8 and ties from the previous year US Open get that, so very cool.

As for other posts regarding Ryder Cup....I can live with that. True, he needs to shore up the short putts, but with the right team energy, which he would be supplying, that could be a non issue.

But before we all fight to drive the Rocco bandwagon (I was already a fan), let's see how he does in upcoming tournaments. We know he gets fired up for the US Open, let's see what's next.

Rocco jumped from 158th to 47th in World Ranking. That ought to get him in at least the PGA.

it seems pretty bold to predict great things from him just because he had a week of great ball striking. Guys get hot, it happens all the time. I am a fan of his, having seen him play a few years ago at my home course, and talked to him a little. But he isn't too long, and can't strike the ball like that with every club in the bag every week. Especially playing that hard draw. Best of luck to him, but I wouldn't be to quick to crown him.

No go on rankings, but he should make PGA Championship based on the money list. To make the PGA, you generally have to be a previous winner of a major in the last five years (lifetime if you won the PGA), a tour event this year, or top 70 on the money list measured from week before last year's PGA to two weeks prior to this year's PGA.

And it looks like he just missed on the British Open because you had to be top 50 in week 21, which was a few weeks ago.

Worst post ever. IF his putter didn't show up, it did. He sprayed it all around. So what? He sprayed it all around the course and still won. Tee to green Rocco may have been better, but on the scoreboard Tiger is.

I don't mean this post to take anything away from Rocco. I've always thought Rocco seemed like a really cool guy. I never claimed to be his biggest fan, but if I saw his name hanging around a leaderboard I would root for him. Except when he is playing against Tiger. Rocco put up a great performance and you really have to respect what he did.

But, no matter what you say about Tiger and his luck or the breaks he gets or whatever non-sense you want to spew, the guy still won the US Open and 13 other majors.
Freddy300
Anyone know if he will play at the British Open?
evanaamodt
He is registered for the qualifier at TPC Michigan, so he will be playing in that unless he gets exempted in by R&A.
golferallan
good post bulldog, agree with just about everything
AirTime23
I actually thought that he would be exempt if in the top 50 of the OWGR two weeks prior to the Open.
However it's not two weeks prior, but actually end of week 21, which was in May.

Other possibilities of getting in are:
Cat. 17: First 2 USPGA TOUR members and any USPGA TOUR members tying for 2nd place, not exempt, in a cumulative money list taken from the USPGA TOUR PLAYERS Championship and the five USPGA TOUR events leading up to and including the 2008 AT&T National. Blank entries will be made on behalf of players qualifying in this category .

or Cat. 18:
The leading player, not exempt having applied F(17) above, in the first 5 and ties of each of the 2008 AT&T National and the 2008 John Deere Classic. Ties will be decided by the better final round score and, if still tied, by the better third round score and then by the better second round score. If still tied, a hole by hole card play-off will take place starting at the 18th hole of the final round. Blank entries will be made on behalf of players qualifying in this category.

And there's always the chance thru local final qualifying, if he applies (apllied) for that.
