well after watching these guys hack it around today, there is no doubt in my mind that I could have put a score up under 100 with no problems. In fact, Romo would have a hard time beating me.

John Atkinson is a winner, no matter what he scored today. Can you imagine how scary this must have been?
I was
blogging about it and watching at the same time - it was so great to see him start well and end well, even if he struggled in the middle.
Were you living vicariously through him like I was?

Pretty bad golf. Wasn't very exciting at all, and they didn't even show any of the bad holes that the guys had.....
Don't really know where Atkinson plays to establish an 8 handicap. I know he would be about a 16 at my club. Although I didn't really care because I happy he had the experience and what a great story surviving cancer. Seems like a really great guy.
and it did not " exceed my expectations" watching it like they said on TV.

There is no way he could play his "normal" game - think about the pressure he was under. I'm surprised he didn't shoot 120, even if he does have an 8 handicap on his home course (which I'm pretty sure GD checked out very carefully before he won this contest).

Whatever. if you are "true" 8-12 HC good luck beating Romo. ha ha
Romo putted bad, sure, but I think you have "watching it on TV" and "reality" merging a little...
Sure looked like I could have done better too, dreams are free and I always dream about hitting it like Tiger

ha ha. you have to relalise Romo is a good player and still struggled...
Timberlake played how I figured I would.
Guess you will never know though. I would sure like to try though.
on a side note. I thought it was Jesper Parnevik when I first flicked it on. then realised it was Timberlake

Would have been alot better to get a +4 handicap out there to see what he would shoot. Would have been much more interesting.
Another reason they should have looked for a 8 handicap at a "tougher" course so that it would have been a little closer than a 8 handicap shooting 30+ strokes over his handicap.

Nothing is as boring as the beginning of today's US Open broadcast. Just because the leaders aren't on the course yet doesn't mean we should have to watch a talkfest of announcers - bla bla bla. There are great players out there playing but we hardly get to see them.
Shut up guys and let us watch some real golf!

they have to make the players seem more human (back stories and more information than I care about)
I say just show them playing golf, if people want to know more...that's what the internets are for

You are wrong...JT and Lauer are a 6 on the index and they struggled to break 100. The distance is the biggest problem along with the rough, once anyone was off the fairway they were screwed. On a side note, JT's JL outfit was pretty sweet, and he definately has a descent little short game.

Did anyone else really enjoy the coverage of it? I thought it was pretty cool and really showed me how hard it is to play at that level of course. Seemed like Atkinson was a really cool guy too.

i was a little pissed that it turned into the Lauer, Timberlake show--what happened to the "regular" guy, our blue-collar golfer. there was span of 35 minutes where they only showed those two and not mr. atkinson. it was crap.

I agree here, it would have been nice for the round to be 2 or even 3 guys like Atkinson trying to beat 100...not lauer and JT trying to beat 100, but still cool idea.

Romo is also a legit 2. So, until you actually tee it up against Romo (and Jessica Simpson's dad

Actually Romo is scratch and he played in the US OPEN Qualifier this year and shot a 75 after a rough start. He does have game he just dosen't play as much as he would like because of his other 2 jobs.
1) Quarter Back for Dallas Cowboy's
2) Entertaining Jessica Simpson

He shot 114. It was edited so they didn't completely embarass the guy, which is why they showed his good start of +4 after 4 holes.

Romo would kick you in the mouth. From the people I've talked to he is flat out GOOD. A 2 handicap he is not, 2 is a traveling tournament handicap not a 2 at 7000 yard course that plays about 6700. I don't know if this is you or not but the guy played in US Open qualifying which you have to be a 1.4 to do, and thats traveling, tournament handicap. I dont think you understand how hard it is to chip and putt at a course set up for an Open.
Remember, there was multiple rounds over 84 posted in the Open this year. These are professional players and extremely good amateurs...not 2 handicaps.

Sorry for the threadjack but does anyone know if they will be re-broadcasting the GolfDigest USOpen Challenge program (the one shown today right before the Open coverage)? I thought I had it set on my Tivo but it looks like I had technical difficulties.
Thanks.

I hope they do. I thought it was pretty cool. I dunno why all you guys are ragging on them. Those greens looked so fast and that rough was so deep. Plus thats gotta be so nerve-racking so i dunno how all you guys can say you could beat them so easily.

I'm surprised no one mentioned anything about the fact that they have a major advantage with Butch Harmon and The Shark on the bag. I'm sure without them, Lauer and JT would not break 100!

Romo is a two handicap and he probably gets to play regularly about 3 months out of the year. How many of us can say that? The guy probably trains for football more than he sleeps. And he's obviously got a home-made swing and has found a way to make it work. Give the guy some credit, there aren't too many multi-sport athletes out there that can excel to and near a professional level in two different sports.
