You'd think all of these people on tv have a vacation home up in the "marine layer". Never knew all these broadcasters were such experts on meteorology.

I lived in San Diego county for almost three years and the weather is fantastic, but the "marine layer" is pretty intense at times and then all of a sudden it opens up. It is like a thick mist that blocks out the sun and keeps the air pretty cool.

Anything like the fog that rolls in up in Monterey or San Fran. I was in an office building visiting someone in SF and saw the fog rolling down the street. Awesome.

We have the same thing up here in the SF Bay Area. I love the Marine Layer (fog).
Why?
It means existing heatwaves are breaking down and relief is on it's way.

I live in Torrance, "Marine Layer" is second nature. It is not always fog, but the overall rolling in of clouds around 4pm and the burning off of those clouds by noon the next day. If the cloud layer is thick enough, yes, you do see fog and/or drizzle in the morning. SOP on the coast during May/June.

It's seriously annoying to hear ONE announcer call it "marine layer" early Thursday, then EVERY freakin' announcer called it that thinking it was some great duo of words. Seriously, it's FOG.

A marine layer is an air mass which develops over the surface of a large body of water such as the ocean or large lake in the presence of a temperature inversion. Fog is a cloud in contact with the ground.
Played at Torrey. Live in SF Bay Area. I'm an expert.
Or I'm good with Google.

FOG is on the ground... makes it hard to see... forms inland a lot (I live in the Central Valley and fog SUCKS here!) and sucks when your driving. "marine layer" is off the ground, comes generally in the moring and afternoons, and is generally near the ocean.
The two are entirely different.
Golfing in fog is like the worst version of easter egg hunt ever. Commonly statments like "It started out to the left but..." or "it felt like a fade swing" are all you have to go by when hopeing to find our ball! golfers had very little problems at torrey today.

We have to get creative with our weather descriptions to keep it interesting.
When the east cost golf commentator's watch the morning weather in San Diego, the weather guy calls it a marine layer.
They're just puppets repeating what they hear.
Here in northern California we also have 'tule' fog, to go along with the 'marine layer' and regular 'fog'

.

Haha. you guys crack me up!
New to the Coronado area in SD.
Its June and I never expect it to have such cool temps. I thought 'June Gloom' was just overcast conditions.
Was at the practice round on Tuesday and going again on Sunday. I must say it was difficult to see where their balls landed.
