My H/c here in the uk is 11, but in the US it works out to 5.7, i think theres is done evrytime they hand a card in, as with us it's done by medals e.t.c

UK handicaps (and Australian) are more of a true reflection of what kind of player you are since the scores turned in are from tournament play only. Going out for a quick 18 with friends doesn't count.

I would love for someone to explain in detail how the American handicap system works. I am a 1 handicap, but certainly don't play to this consistently. My question is why does every score you turn in not count and my average score that shows up at my home couse is higher than what my handicap translates to. I know it is based off of course rating and slope and all that, but is there an easier way of understanding the whole process? Thanks!

Score minus Course rating.
Then
Multiply result by slope
then
divide by 113 (average slope)
result = Index
Average 10 of your best recent 20 indices and you get approximately your Handicap Index

I don't know the exact ins and outs of our system, but as its been said before it only counts in competition, and is adjusted after each and every round, either up or down. add .1 if u are over ur hcap. If ur off 4 or less add .2 if u double ur h'cap. Take .4 off for each shot under ur h'cap from 19-27. .3 from 13-18, .2 from 5-12 and .1 from 4 down. Also works on course rating...which is rated by the nation's golf governing body and can change one to three? strokes from each tee depending on the scores of the day (from the best 15?), which accounts for easier pin placements, tees moved up a little, easier conditions etc. That's my understanding of our (R&A) h'cap system

One more step... you multiply the result by .96 to get your index.
