I'm going to have a "play day" while I'm in Providence, RI at the beginning of August and am looking for some tips on where I should play and where I shouldn't.......

Thanks!! smile.gif

Depends on what type of layout you like.
Links style, long and challenging; Newport National in Middletown Montaup Country Club, Portsmouth
number of holes on the water. Triggs Memorial right in Providence, Old Donald Ross, pretty good shape even though it gets a lot of play. Check www.rigalinks.org /member clubs quite a few to choose from.

Layout type is not a concern for me....I like both modern and classic layouts. At the top of my list thus far (based on my own research) is Newport Nat., Triggs, and New England CC. Triggs looked a little short to me, but if it's a good test, I'll play a Donald Ross layout in a second. I'm also considering pulling some strings and seeing if I can get on Newport CC.

Any other thoughts???

Triggs is a great course. If you're a single no problem. If not, make a tee time.

I've been playing Foxborough CC lately. Nice track, about 6600 yds from the tips but will play longer if you're not in play off the tee (which course won't, right?). About a half hour up 95N

Thanks.....

Looked at Foxborough's website.....looks like a pretty course! I'll consider it.

Try Pinehills in Plymouth. Excellent courses (Jones & Nicklaus).

I'm sure I'm in the minority on this one, but I thought Newport National was over rated and over priced. Staying in RI, I was impressed with Green Valley in Portsmouth.

In MA, either Pinehills course is great, as is Waverly Oaks and Crosswinds.

Further North, with some great views of Boston is Granite Links in Quincy/Milton

And if you can pull the right strings, I wouldn't leave Newport CC for anything in the area.

Thanks again for the tips guys......keep 'em coming!

If you have more strings to pull...I would recommend Agawam Hunt or Wannamoisett. Both are private, located in East Providence, and top-notch. (They play the Northeast Am at Wannamoisett.)

Triggs is a great layout...but the conditions are sometimes iffy and make sure you give yourself about 6 hours for the round. They pack 'em in there like a cattle trailer.

TPC Boston is up in Norton...it's worth considering.

No question, you should ride over to Newport (Middletown) and play Newport National. Its a great layout and in 5 star condition. Check out there website, you'll be booking it after you check it out.

Newport National is an enjoyable course to play, but Triggs is probably a better deal although it is sometimes crowded.

Pull any strings you've got (and then some) to get onto Newport CC. It's about as good as a golf experience you can get in the world; there's just something about that majestic clubhouse looming above you throughout the round.

Thanks again guys..... smile.gif

I looked at Newport National's website prior to posting my query here. Basically, I pulled out Golf Digest's Places to Play and looked at their State Rankings to get an idea where I might want to go. I think the top of my list would be trying to get on Newport CC or Agawam Hunt Club (gotta call my father and see who he knows in Providence!). Second choice right now is either Newport National or Pinehills (wich looks AWESOME!).

No comments on New England CC??? I thought it looked pretty nice on their website....... Hale Irwin design, host to US AM and PGA Tour Qualifying, voted among "Best 18" by Boston Globe. It's short (6450 yard, par 71) but it looks pretty challenging.

Newport CC is Ultra Private, not sure if you know that. If you know somebody that belongs and can get you on, that would be a great place to play, although I know one of the founders of Newport Nat. and he said Newport Nat. is a better track. If your willing to drive about an hour and a half, there is also Pinehills in Plymouth Mass. I think somebody else mentioned. 2 great courses to choice from there. I don't think New England CC is really that great from what I've heard, but I think overall it's fairly decent.

Also, Old Scottish Links in Bridgewater, MA is also pretty good. I played it years ago and its a fun course.

Yeah, I figured that...but my father has "the pull" to get me on places like that. I just need to chat with him and see if he knows anyone who is a member there. I've played some pretty Ultra Private clubs in my day. Los Angeles CC (which I have played 5 times) to name one! smile.gif

Again - thanks for the tips and I'll take a peek at Old Scotish Links........and I definately don't mind driving 1.5 hours to play a great course! I live in Texas and a 1.5 hour drive is like going to the grocery store! HAHAHA!
