The 2nd shot was just as bad.

Still shot a good score. He did come off as a little bitter to me in the ESPN interview piece yesterday about the choice he made to remain an amateur after College.

didn't see it , can someone please post?

How about the one TGC replayed 599,177 times last night? "I haven't seen it...don't care to see it". Time to get over it.

sorta off topic, but i really enjoy watching the par 3s when they broadcast the groups coming thru them thoughout the day.

last year at one event (has escaped me) Corey Pavin basically shanked one into the bleachers dead right.

he had to take a crazy drop 30 yards away to get clear relief and then drained an amazing 15 footer for par.

Great to see the pros hitting the odd clunker yet not getting rattled and playing for the score, not "how it looks"

Trying to learn that myself!

Ok back to the masters! biggrin.gif

I dont think he's had it that tough, he's played in all the big AM's traveld everywhere, practices a lot and gets to play with his kid, he must be out of vacation days for the next 15 years. I dont see what he gave up he could be like some pro's that are back in real world making about 30 a year and not playing at all.

He came across very bitter towards professional golf, seemingly blaming pro golf for destroying 3 of his father's marriages, his Dad never spending time with him, etc.

He is 35 years old, he should get over the stuff that happened to him when he was a kid.

Like someone posted above, he hasn't had it tough.

And to be honest, how is he managing a fund when he is out playing all of the time?

My understanding of his investment firm is that he doesn't invest any of his client's money in stocks himself. He spreads it out to all of the hedge funds that his privileged "access" has allowed him to meet over the years. I read in the Golf World article a few months ago that he spends $70-80,000 per year playing amateur golf. This included CC memberships, travel, golf instruction, fitness instructor, Nutritionalist, and I cannot remember what else.

For him to say (like he did in the TGC piece) that nobody follows their passion, that they play for money.........it is easy for him to pass up professional golf since his dad has 10's of millions of dollars. He was a member of 4 country clubs when he was growing up - Stonebridge CC in McKinney, TPC@Las Colinas, Prestonwood CC, and I can't remember the 4th one.

I have actually been a fan of his since the very early days that I began taking lessons off of Hank Haney in 1989-1990. I have to admit that I was envious over the years.......unlimited lessons from one of the world's best instructors, great career (I mean he must take 8-10 weeks of vacation a year), and he played in 4 U.S. Opens, 2 Masters, countless U.S. Am's, and U.S. Mid-Ams, Western Open, Coleman Invitational, Crump Cup, etc....... Why would you want to play professional golf when you can have the best of both worlds.

The TGC piece did paint the family out to be sorta bitter. I actually found myself having lost respect for the entire situation. Who would like to bet me that next year he comes back out and says that he misses the competition and can't get by without it and begins playing the amateur tourneys again. This whole thing could have been a PR move for his investment company. Who knows.

Anybody notice that the dad got divorced, lost weight and dyed his hair. Funny that a divorce will make you focus on different things.

Without golf he never would have had the hedge fund investors. He met most of those contacts through golfing circles and/or his dad's contacts. He works until about 3 here in Las Colinas (Irving) and then I see him at the The Sports Club (TPC) everyday from around 3 until dark practicing.

As someone else mentioned, he had his run to basically hit as many balls as he wanted and do whatever he wanted when he was growing up at both the country club and then at Haney's golf ranch. The 4th club you don't remember is the venerable Dallas Country Club in Highland Park. They had a membership there too, and of course all of the kids went to Highland Park High.

Haney spent more time with Kelli and Hank than with Trip, though. Most of Trip's swing work was with Steve Johnson, Hank's right hand guy. I used to have chipping games with Trip and Kelli all the time at the Ranch. Trip had an incredible short game but never has been a great ballstriker. Both Hank and Kelli were better ballstrikers than Trip.

I don't care about all the drama.

Just wanna see the hosel rocket.

And, BTW........YES, he has an ego the size of TEXAS!

He just sounds bitter and to try to put your name around likes of Bobby Jones is height of foolishnes.
If you have it for the game , give it all go compete at the highest level by being pro. Not every pro golfer ends up divorced and there are amateur golfers who are divorced .
I think Tiger destroyed him on the course mentally a decade ago and he could not recover from the trauma.

I think he did come off sounding a little sore about the Tiger loss, but as far as the feeling of him being overall a bitter guy, I think that may have been the result of some creative editing. I just don't think he's a very flamboyant guy and probably isn't as comfortable as others doing that kind of thing. In his defense, (and I don't remember exactly, but) I don't think he compared himself to Bobby Jones...I think whoever did the piece did that. It was very poor comparison. FWIW, from what I've heard from people that actually know Trip, he's a great guy.

I heard - and again it is 3rd person - that in the 2003 Walker Cup, they had a hard time finding anybody who would play with him. Again, this is 3rd person.

However, I had my own experience with Trip at a U.S. Mid-Am in which I was lucky enough to qualify. As the story goes, one of his friends is one of my friends, so I walked up to him on the putting green during a practice round, introduced myself and told him about our mutual acquaintance and he totally blew me off and walked to the other side of the putting green.

Like I said before, I would bet a good sum of money that next spring, we hear about missing competition and a return to the game.

I don't agree that professional golf = no time with your kids, no time with your wife, divorce, etc.... That is a cop out. When I was growing up, my Dad worked 50-60 hours a week, 50 weeks a year and I didn't get to spend much time with him. I would be willing to bet that EACH and every professional golfer spends significant time with his children - if he so chooses. They only work 24-28 weeks a year. That is a lot of free time with the wife and kids.
golfer98
bitter guy, 'nuff said. blaming pro golf for divorce in his family? what does that have to do with anything? how many "money managers" get divorced?--TONS of them. and he still hasn't gotten over getting mauled by Tiger. he'd kill to play professional golf-he just doesn't have the game. time to face it, Trip, the pro game was never an option for you, really. get over it.

I couldnt agree more. I think someone even said it during the interview...maybe his sister that he played with everything he had and came up short...I think Tiger ripped his heart out. Now, I would think that if that was me I wouldn't have walked away from golf the way he did...
