hi, i met someone on a chairlift today who was from st. andrews and he said because he's a resident of st. andrews he only pays 110 pounds a year and can play all of the courses as much as he wants. this sounded ridiculous to me so i checked the website and its true, although its 113 pounds this year.. my question is, does anyone know what the criteria is to get this? do you just need to have a lease or address in st. andrews or is it more stringent? how about if one was thinking of moving to st. andrews for six months, would they be able to get in on it or is it only for long time residents?

what an incredible deal for those that can get it.

There was a guy on here, cant remember his name, but he was a member of St Andrews. Was offering to get anyone on the course if they would host him at their home club. Dang, if I had a nice place, I'd offer in a second! Awesome deal!

you have to be a resident, and from what i've read there is a long wait. They only give out X amount of those passes out a year.

George Peper wrote a great book called "2 years in St. Andrews" and talks about the pass and how he played everyday....

ahh i see. if someone were wanting to move to scotland for a few months, what would be a good place to go? ideally a nice charming town with memorable affordable links golf in the area, or somewhere that a membership can be purchased for the season.

I played the Old course two years ago, and my caddie told me that story. I thought he was B.S.ing me, put I confirmed it in the pub around the corner. Pretty much the best deal on the planet if you can get it.

Think it is going up to £150 a year but is going to include the Castle Course (No7) which looks like it will be amazing.

Think you need to be on voting register and doctors list as well as getting signed off as being a local. there is a short list of signatures that are acceptable for this.

Alternatively the easy way is become a student there as that gets you the membership easier and still for same price. I had the best four years of my life there getting to play the old over 100 times! i wish i was still there playing everyday and not working!!

A friend of mine chose to do his PhD at St Andrews for that very perk.
