Johnny Miller says that Phil switched to a new blade putter for the third round. Does anybody know what model it is, or if its a prototype? I couldnt find any pics of it, but from the looks of it on TV it didn't look like it had an insert.

It is an Odyssey and I believe it has an insert as well it is modeled after the 8802 Napa styles not 100% sure on the insert but I would say yes he is a full Callaway staffer.

And he may change again tommorow, based on how he felt he rolled it today. He has been doing it all year. He'll usually start a round with a regular #9 putter, and if he's not feeling it he changes to a smaller heel shafted blade that from what I can see doesn't have an insert. I have seen pics before and it is odyssey made. If I can find them again I will post.

Phil has two putters.

One is a Darkened White Hot XG 9. One is a Silver Stainless Steel 8802 blade. He switches them out based on how he's rolling it, how the greens are physically, etc.

He does this a lot in these warm-up events, but expect to see the White Hot XG 9 to be back in the bag for the Masters. He won the event with the putter, and almost won the US Open with that putter.

Odyssey doesn't currently sell the 8802 blade he rolls, but they do sell the XG 9 in a silver finish. Keep in mind Phil has probably 5 different XG 9 putters with different lofts and weights.

Phils Putters

Theres a link to a write up from Odyssey about Phil's putters. It has pictures of both and tells you the specs. They were just talking about the putter on golf digest and it looks like the one in the picture. I used to use the #9 and loved it, only got rid of it because the Scotty is impossible to beat. Hope that helps.

What kind of grip is that new grip he has on his putter?
siennaslammer
i think isn't it about the speed of the green for phil as to which one he uses.

There is a video fo Phil talking about how he changes his putter based on on fast (lighter head) or slow (heavier head) the greens are and if they are Bermuda (requires more loft), Bent Grass (less loft)

If I can find the video I'll post it.

With the way that Phil putts he would be better off to just use his foot or a pool cue. haha.

Can't be certain on the putter style, but you can tell the grip is definitely longer than a normal putter grip. Compare it to the size of his hand:

I watched it too and that was pathetic. Miller hadn't really played all that much before that event, so his 81 was typical.

I think the conversations between Nicklaus and Miller were extremely tense and almost embarrasing. Jack basically was being nice by saying Miller just needed a few tourneys under his belt to get back into form.

Form for what. It was 1997 and Johnny Miller was over. Jack was just simply the best the golfer to ever play the game, so he played like it.

I wonder if Miller ever tried to harness or lock his left foot down to force himself not to slip out as bad as he did. It slips bad and that just seems like something he would try to fix.
