Yep, I'm the same guy who in my last round before yesterday stroked 40 putts in 18 holes.
Well, that putter (Gauge Design GAA3 Black Finish) went in the closet and is tempting me to be sold. What did I do??? I started ho'ing as soon as I got home. Saw a putter on fleabay that interested me so I worked out a deal with the guy to end the auction early and got the putter yesterday and decided to go to the putting green with it.
First off, the putting green where I was practicing is anything but flat. Pretty ungulated and 2-tiered to top it off. I stood on the side trying to find a stance I was comfortable with.. I finally found something that felt natural so I started off by dropping 6 balls around a hole from 5-6 feet. I proceed to bang all 6 home. That was nice and built some good confidence. I moved to 8-10 feet and proceeded to drop 5 of 6 and the only miss hit the lip and turned hard. By now, I was feeling very good and the memory of the last round was fading fast. I hit a couple 50 footers to test the lag on this thing and actually made 1 out of 6 and the other 5 were very manageable 2nd putts, most were around 2-3'. By now my confidence was sky high.
I only had time to play 9 before I had to pick up the baby, so I decided it was time to do the field test...
Again, the greens where I was playing are not dead flat, in fact, some of the greens on the front nine aren't even fair they are so sloped. I thought this would be a good place to test out the new putter and see if it could preform like it did on the PG.
Starting with the first hole, I literally made almost everything I stood over. I ended up with 13 putts in 9 holes and it could have easily been 12 as I had one almost disappear and pop back out of the hole because it was a little firm. Also, the putts I missed, the speed was so good, the longest 2nd putt I had was around 3'. Now, I'm no math major, but 13 x 2 = 26. That would be 14 strokes better than my previous effort. That's a drastic change. Longest putt I made was around 25 feet.
It was simply amazing how I could actually read the green and pick a spot to putt and make putts now that I had confidence not only in my stroke, but in my putter as well.
I ended up shooting 33 (Par 36) because I missed 2 GIR but even then, I knew if I could get it around the hole, I knew it would be an up-and-in.
What putter is partially responsible for this huge turnaround????
A Scotty Cameron Futura Long Putter that has been lengthened to 52". I put the top grip in the middle of my chest. Thumb on top. Bottom hand holds a claw grip mid way down the bottom grip. My front foot is pulled back 3/4 from my back foot, it's not an open stance, but it helps me get the long putt stroke through and helps me finish every time instead of jabbing at the putt.
Yep, the putter looks awkward, the stance looks awkward, but how can you argue with results? I'm going back again today to play 18 at a different course with some pretty fast greens to see how it does.
I'll let you guys know if the potato masher continues to work it's magic.
