BEND OF THE RIVER GC
DPD17 and I played in the 2008 Irish Open at Royal American Golf Links in Columbus, Ohio this past weekend. Talk about cold! As we got close to the course all the puddles nearby the roads were FROZEN! I knew that weather.com had missed the boat and 50 degrees was definitely out of the question. The tournament featured 60, 2 man teams braving 38 degree weather with a 4-5 degree windchill on top of that. The 2 man scramble event was a SELL OUT, and teams were turned away who had tried to register too late. Royal American Links is a pretty nice course, well laid out and with maybe one house adjacent the 18th fairway. I am sure I would have enjoyed the course even more if the weather was nicer. With the wind and the cold weather, I figured 2 under would win it all. I was wrong, 6 under won it and 2 teams carded a 66. We ended up dead even par 72 which placed us about tied for 8th or 9th out of the 60 teams. Not too shabby considering neither one of had played for quite sometime and the wintery conditions we endured. All of you Southern people may not understand how crazy golfers here in the Midwest are and that they are dying to play some golf! Bitter weather aside, this really was a great time, heck we even won one of the three $150 skins which we gladly collected after eating our fish and chips dinner.
