Full Version: Faldo's Job as a commentator

I know it may sound like nit-picking, but Faldo just comes off as such a snob whenever he talks. A little bit of arrogance never hurt anyone, but Faldo just seems to care more about his high-roller social functions, and making sure the audience knows that he could "beat the numbers" (Trackman stats) of many of the tour's current players, than the golf he's watching. But even if what he was saying was worth listening to, his accent is absolutely horrendous and incredibly difficult to listen to. I know I can mute the TV, or even change the channel, but I'm sure there are other more qualified commentators who also happen to be successful golfers. I really just wish he would go ahead and retire from his professional talking job.

Well I'd rather listen to him than Johnny Miller. He's the true "John Madden" of golf.
ShoxTP
Affirmative, A Bubba Watson drive better than Miller. Faldo has his wierd moments but you gotta love it! The running joke at Doral with his 223 yard 3 wood was hilarious. Love Faldo.
DRGJR72
Has the game to back up what he says, and seems to be fair and well spoken. Has been there and knows the deal. He speaks well and he is a smart guy. I enjoy listening to him.

Have no probs with the Faldo...

I think he's a great commentator, besides, 6 majors and one of only 12 people to be world number one, their aren't many people with that kind of resume. Also from an international point of view it's nice to have someone British in the commentary box, kind of refereshing after some of the guys like Johnny Miller.

Ya!!! and unlike miller, FALDO can still play...Hate miller...oh to get back on topic, at least Nick knows his stuff. I can't really think of a better replacement. Maybe one of those guys who does European tour events. Thier announcers are awesome.... they are always like, "And he's done a little gem" in a cool a** english accent when somebody hits an awesome shot. Anyway Faldo will do for now.
silliwilli
Faldo is a legend, wish we had him doing european tour!! As for annoying accent, it's all subjective, if I had an American commentating on our tour I would probably feel the same!
Rossco
Faldo is great, he should commentate on every tour and has anyone else noticed his on air chemistry with his co comentator I can't remember her name now
tbowles411
No issues with Faldo. At least he still has the game to back up his comments.

Faldo's great. Miller's everybody sucks commentary is getting old.
wagsgt
Yea I think Faldo is one of the best color guys in sports

Faldo is very good with the CBS group , not so much with TGC crew ... where he just horses around and isnt very serious. TGC obviously isnt very serious since it keeps Tillingham around , which is a complete joke and ruins each broadcast.

I finally found a simlpe way to descibe Miller's commentary! Thanks CaryGolfer biggrin.gif

Love Faldo, love Miller. I think they both have their place and do a good job of telling it like it is. It's the suck ups like Nance and Kostis that I can't stand.

Kelly Tilghman is her name, and she's a definite crush of mine. Any lady who can talk about golf for six hours goes right to the top of my list.

Faldo is entertaining and obviously an expert on how to play the game. I get tired of Johnny Miller; I feel he talks too much and tries to tell the audience what the player is going to try or how the player should hit the shot about to be played. Just shut up and let them play and let us watch more.

I have no issues with Faldo. I think he does a great job. Keeps you entertained without trying too hard.
McGuire
damn , I thought us Irish werent into cross-dressers ... O well to each his own
Tillingham is brutal , if she were fired yesterday it would be to late
dsilvers
i like all of em except for tillgman or however you spell it, i think it may just because i am still not used to seeing a woman or hearing one in the booth after all these years. not that i think women shouldnt be commentating. Would love to have Miller and Faldo in the booth together, i could definatley see fists flying becuase every other word would conradict what the other says lol

also when Faldo giggled while the while Bubba Elkington exchange happened, made him go up 20 commentating points in my book, whatever that means
maligaya
I enjoy both (Miller and Faldo). They have their own unique style, make quirky/weird or controversial comments at times but I enjoy and appreciate the difference in personalities. I don't get annoyed easily but something about Tillingham that annoys the hell out of me.
gregflat9
6 majors.

How can you not like Faldo? Has a tremendous game, can laugh at himself, has been at the top, etc. etc.

It's not like he's Dennis Miller talking about football.

To be honest, Faldo offers some of the most insightful and intelligent commentary in our beloved sport.

He was #1 in the World and THE MAN back in the early 1990's! (He's also VERY Brittish!)

Combo of the career and the accent, probably makes him come off as a snob.

Farthest thing from the truth! Compared to what he was in his hey-day as a player he's a real laid-back comic!!

Did I mention that he is BRITISH?! (...Not in any way knocking our friends from across the pond!)

I like Nick Faldo more than any other commentator in sports.

He's full of clever little quips (just like the first camping holiday with your girlfriend, the excitement was in tents) that keep things fun and interesting, and has incredible insight.

I happen to really enjoy his accent too, and find it very understandable. Then again, I watch a lot of BBC too.
CaledoniaKid
When I first read the thread title I thought about how much I enjoy listening to him and then thought about Johnny Miller...I think he's is brutally honest and that is refreshing. I actually think the two of them are very good at what they do. I agree with the others who said Nance and some others were annoying to listen too. Maybe they can get a little full of themselves, but most former pro athletes are as well. They know their stuff and call it like they see it.

I like Faldo, but I hate Jonny Miller. I don't know what it is, but I can't stand listening to him.
jebb
Great player and my hero growing up here in Britain.

But I find it slightly hilarious the way he has changed after the way he conducted himself through his playing career with the media. Talk about the bloke least likely.

Who could forget his version of "My Way" after the 92 Open?

Maybe because he's senile? I remember a couple of weeks back he likened an approach shot to a "Julius Erving slam dunk"....... russian_roulette.gif

Faldo may be gone sooner than Kelly if he doesn't stop his constant shilling for companies/associations he represents. He has been warned to stop the unpaid advertising...
Vegas Golfer
I would rather have Faldo and Kelly than Johnny Come Lately Miller!! Miller was at a golfing event in Las Vegas and broke up a tent with his cart because of stupidity.

Accent? What accent? rolleyes.gif

I like Faldo's commentary. Miller's style is abrasive and is getting old. He is knowledgable however. He is ridiculously tough on human error. Faldo can get a little silly sometimes, but he knows the golfswing.

But, in general, the booth staff on the PGA tour should take lessons from the guys in Europe. Too much chatting going on in the States. Those European PGA Tour guys on the Golf Channel are businesslike and I like that style better.

A little off topic. Once I heard the BBC commentators at Wimbledon doing play by play. I enjoyed so much more than what we hear in America. It was like I was just watching the match.

I mean, come on, does someone need to tell me that we just saw a great shot?

I do enjoy the swing analysis occasionally, especially in the super slow motion.

Faldo is awesome
pdksca
Faldo was inhumanly good when he was playing his best. But in life he's human. Funny. Divorced. Falling for young women and getting dumped. Fallible. And still funny. Ya gotta love him!
TOUCH
Faldo is ok, but Johnny Miller and the rest of the NBC crew are the best there is.
For those who do not like Johnny, you do not like a guy who tells it like it is!
Ferehty is also king.

It's amazing how few posts it takes for a thread about Nick Faldo to morph into an "I hate Johnny Miller" bash-session.
EDIT: Or an "I love Johnny Miller" love-fest.

Ditto, Same for Nobilo, my other favorite. I don't understand the "arrogant" comments, as Faldo seems to have no trouble poking fun at himself.

Really I think faldo is very good, very informative. Johnny Miller IMO is good too, both are very knowledgeable.
