Having just got back in from work and had chance to watch the Open de Andalucia from this afternoon, I thought I'd throw in a thread to congratulate the winner Thomas Levet.
The affable Frenchman has suffered some setbacks in recent years, not least of which a bout of vertigo that, for a time, looked as if it may bring his playing career to an end; but an improvement in the condition and some fine golf saw him win in Spain after a one hole playoff with England's Oliver Fisher. Levet and Fisher both shot 67 on Sunday to finish at -16, while Lee Westwood finished in third place after a final round of 71. Levet's win is his first victory in four years.
After a stirring finish by Levet, with birdies at 16 and 17, Fisher hit his tee shot into a pond on the 72nd hole with a rush of adrenaline sending his 3 iron tee shot over 270 yards into the hazard which he thought he could not reach. Levet's par 4 on the same hole, after lipping out a 25 yard bunker shot saw him into the playoff which he won with another par after Fisher this time bunkered his tee shot to the 18th hole leaving him unable to reach the green.
In keeping with the European Tour tradition, Levet was mobbed by several French players and caddies who celebrated in Formula 1 style by drenching him in champagne.
Congratulations to Levet, and commiserations to Fisher who looks to be one of the brightest young prospects for British golf.
