Hey,

Im trying to refinish my SC Circa 62. I've bought the Birchwood Casey Gun Blue Kit and have tried to get a the finish I desire.

Is it possible to get it dark black or does it only go a dark grey.

The steps I have been using is to do all the normal prep to get it down to its raw state. Then I apply the Perma blue using the swab that it comes with.

After the first coat I use some of the steel wool provided to work out any streaks etc. I then rinse, leave for 5mins, wash with warm soapy water, dry and put on the next coat.

However, after I've done this a few times it doesn't seem to go on anymore and go any darker. This is after three or four coats. Is this as dark as it will go? Am I taking off the finish with the steel wool that is provided?

I have done the normal search but nothing seems to be coming up. Am I missing a step in my process? Whats the best way to get as dark a finish as possible?

Thanks,

i just kept applying the blue without sanding or cleaning. it seemed to get pretty dark for me on a studio design.

I just Gun Blued my SC Catalina 2. After 4 coats, it's just about black. I think there are a couple keys to getting the finish dark.

1. Make sure the putter is extremely clean and degreased prior to applying the blue solution. I used the de-rusting and degreasing solution in the Birchwood Casey kit. I used 4 applications of each to make sure the putter was clean. Also used Steel Wool in between de-rusting and degreasing.

2. Shorter coats of the blueing solution are better than longer coats. Apply the blueing solution and rinse after no longer than one minute. Repeat this a bunch of times.

That's what worked for me. I've also heard that heating the putter head slightly will lead to darker Gun Blue finishes.

Good Luck.

Casey Super Blue puts a very dark finish on in one or two coats.

can i blue my charcoal mist? will I have to sand down the original finish first or can I just clean/degrease and then apply the blueing?

Make sure the putter is stripped of the orginal finish, and degreased.

Make sure to heat the putter by dipping it in hot water (then drying) or using a heat gun.

Make sure to use an applicator that has no grease on it from your fingers, or somewhere else. A toothbrush that is new is great because the FDA requires it to be free from any grease preservative. Don't touch the bristles with your fingers.

Spread the bluing quickly and cover all parts. Rinse with VERY COLD water.

Repeat the process of applying the bluing 4 to 6 times, to get it really dark.

The secret to getting the blue dark is to have the metal very clean, because the bluing is nothing more than a chemical reaction, so you want the pores clean of any oils. To maintain the blue, and it will wear quickly, is to apply oil to the freshly blued head to maintain the look for as long as possible. Let it set with the oil overnight. Patience pays off.
