Is there a difference and if so what is the difference between a Class A membership in the Golf Course Superintendents of America vs being a Certified Golf Course Superintendent?
Does one receive a class A membership and then later become certified or can it be done all at once? Thanks

To be a Class A: you need to be employed as a Supt. for three years and have a median level of continuing education.
To be a CGCS: you need to first be a Class A, have a higher level of continuing education and then pass a rigorous examination which includes a written portfolio and a golf course examination, among other things.
Currently, only 25% of Class A Superintendents have their CGCS. The GCSAA hopes to have more recognition of the designation and of the commitment it takes to achieve it. I'm just starting on mine now (I've been Class A for 5 years) and hope to complete the process in 3 to 4 years.
Hope this helps... you have an interest in being a Supt.?
