you would think that there was no way jimmy roberts could top himself after his botched questioning with sean o'hair. well he came pretty close yesterday in my opinion. when they showed cliff kresge about to hit a tee shot, jimmy roberts opened his big mouth and said that cliff kresge was an alternate replacing ernie els, and that there was a lot of irony in that, and then after kresge hit the shot, roberts stated, "the irony of course being that ernie els' son has autism, and so does kresge's". seriously, i fail to see that the fact that two tour players' sons both have unfortuntate handicaps is just a funny coincidence, or "ironic" as roberts so eloquently put it. his voice makes my hair hurt, it reminds me of when someone scratches a chalkboard.

Irony is not a funny coincidence. its when there is a difference between what would be exptected to happen and what actually happens. in fact, it is ironic that the son of one man who replaced another man has the same rare condition as the son of the man that was replaced.
that being said, I remember being taken aback by his comment, and how oddly stated it was.

well the way he stated it made it seem like he meant it to be a funny coincidence.

I think I'd characterize this as coincidental rather than ironic. Unless Els pulled out
because of his autistic son, then Kresge as his replacement might be ironic. But the unusual factual similarity doesn't necessarily create irony.
But regardless of the use of a rhetorical device, Jimmy Roberts is a pipsqueak and a dope

ironic at all.... Ironically.
Very strange thing for Roberts to say really, and of absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the proceedings that were on-screen at the time.
If Roberts ever gets a cavity, he could use one of his shoes to fill it.

Word. We need to get rid of the word "ironic" since 90% of us seem to have so much difficulty with it. Reminds me of how people use the word "literal" when they mean, actually the opposite - "figurative". Nice going, Jiminy, you are quite the broadcaster.

I did catch that, I was unnecessary and awkwardly sad, he's heading down the same road as the growing majority of sportscasters. Give me Chris "boomer" Berman, he's the original, give him a seat though, he doesnt need to be walking around out there.

I don't think that point needed to be brought up as most golf fans saw the Golf Channel segment on the tour players that have children with autism.
It sounded like it was a little forced and excessive and that means it wasn't necessary to mention about Kresge.
Especially with Roberts saying it really validates that it didn't need to be said.

Whether you like Jimmy or not, he has won 13 Emmy awards since 1988 for Sports Journalism. That in itself gives him some credibility in my book. I have no problem with someone that has dedicated his career to some aspect and has excelled in it. The 13 awards give him merit. Whether or not he meets everyones standards as the best or not is irrelevant. He is a good sportscaster/announcer and has the hardware to prove it. No different than some guy on tour that has 13 wins, very similar in that all Roberts can win is awards, and he has 13 of them.
Plus he is a Terp and has had many a beer at RJ Bentley's. He is ok in my book as I have had drinks at Maryland and Bentley's is the spot for most that live on campus. Plus he sent one of his sports Emmy's to display there.
Give the guy a break....he has earned it, more so than many in the sportscasting field,

HA HA! That really doesn't say much- IMO. Basically if you work for a major network, you're going to receive an Emmy. :p
The list of people who have received Sports Emmys is very long and includes many crappy people. Again, IMO.

I guess this just proves the old adage... Those who can't do, talk about it! I would guess that he was never an athelete... and got his sports fix by doing the news! Problem is, he has the perfect voice for the newspaper!
If he ever leaves NBC he will probably end up at the Golf Channel.

I was thinking exactly the same thing when I read that post. I mean....what kind of validation does having a beer in the same bar and winning some stupid industry awards give to someone that is a complete ******?
I have beers in cool places too....but there is something interesting about all of those places.....ANYONE CAN GET IN! The tools have the same rights as you and me.
And besides....didn't Al Gore win an Emmy? I'd flush that argument down the toilet.

I'm another one who's never met the man, so I'm saying this purely on the basis of the verbal diarrhoea that he doles out whenever he's on-air. The man is intensely annoying, and yet another 'theatrical monologue' merchant - in the mould of Rich Lerner. Why is US golf coverage awash with people who think they're Richard Burton?
Utter pretentious drivel; and whoever's been on the panel for those awards he's apparently won must have been slipped a plain brown envelope each year by a bloke in a trilby and a trenchcoat.
As well as being annoying, he also drops in regular paux pas that make my teeth itch.
The combination of him and Miller have me contemplating whether to even watch the golf when I know NBC are providing the coverage - even though I pay good money for it. And that really is annoying.
