Just wondering if you guys ever witnessed some ugly golf coming from a PGA Pro. I know Cink just hit some fugly shots last Sunday, especially the left handed shot next to the tree trunk. crazy.gif

TV coverage rarely shows off the bad shots which I would love to see. It would be cool if at the end of the Tour season CBS would dedicate some time to the worst shots of the year followed by the BEST. yahoo.gif

Have you ever witnessed some ugly golf from a Tour Pro?

Stenson's 3 wood off the tee at this years WGC Match Play Championship was hideous to say the least.

Wish I was there. Can you elaborate on some details?
Thanks!

Gotta agree Stenson and Cink are at the top of the Stinker Shot list at the moment.

He was 1-up on #18 and went with a 3 wood from the tee. It went 45 degrees left, never got more than ten feet off the deck and went about 80 yards into the junk.

Laughably, he made par and won the match against a stunned Robert Allenby.

It was indeed a dogs' dinner of a shot.

I remember watching that on TV, I was just dumbfounded at how good he recovered from that swing. Duck hooks it left, about 140 yards. Pitches out sideways, hits a 3/4 5 iron to 5 feet and sinks it for par.

Calc's left handed whiff and greenside bunker shot into the pond (although the bunker shot did'nt look that bad) at the Honda, and Singh's topped fairway bunker shot in the playoff at Pebble were pretty bad shots. Tiger Woods opening drive in Tucson wasn't too spiffy either.

Why do I remember the bad shots better than the good shots? Hmm.., something to ponder about my own game too.

I've seen Darren Clarke and the aforementioned Stenson hit some quality shanks over the years, but My father still talks of a shot that Greg Norman hit in the early 80s when playing at the old Martini tournament at Lindrick when he apparently cold topped a driver about 30 yards from the 16th tee.

Apparently he was 'distracted by a worm that popped up behind the ball'

I kid you not...

Didnt tiger open the brittish at carnoustie last year with a hook into the bern on the first hole of the tourney? Id say given his status in the game, and the stage upon which he did it....that would be a pretty big clunker...
soberguy16
again, stensons 3-wood has gotta be the worst shot this year. he has a habit of mishits from time to time, at the target world challenge this winter he hozzeled a 9-iron on a short par 3 which was also pretty horrendous

It was in Dubai, but Ernie Els shot into the 18th hole when he needed birdie to tie Tiger has to be mentioned. How does a tour pro that has only 205 to clear the water and like 215 to the pin knock into the lake more than 20 yards short?

The only miss that puts him out of the tourney is short, heck the back bunker or even the grandstand is the better miss of the two.

Tom Pernice at the AT&T he was hitting 5 iron i believe and hit about 50 yards into a bunker that wasnt even in play for the par 3. Still managed to get up and down though!

That is hilarious!! cheesy.gif ......don't stare at worms before you tee off.

Well, I my self have hit some awful tee shots. My worst shot happened about 4 years ago before I took lessons and I hit a worm burner straight into one of the ladies tee markers. The ladies tee marker went flying out of the ground about 10 ft. and my ball took it's place. Funny thing is....it was a round tee marker!

I also have a cousin who hit a negative drive -20 yds.....it hit a palm tree just right of the tee box about 50 yds out.....it was a nasty slice! cheesy.gif

I think that VJ's skull/topped fairway bunker shot in the playoff at Pebble had to have been the worst of the year so far. It cost him the tournament.

Tiger hit basically the same shot on Saturday, was not even close to making the carry.

In Ernie's defence, I think a swirling wind (and the presence of the hospitality stands) had a lot to do with that shot. It was at least out of the middle of the bat.

Stenson's was nearly off the shaft.
steve81
can we get some links to some vids of these shots?

I just happened to be running my video capture that this moment. I just uploaded to YouTube!

Can't find the 3 wood of Stenson's, but this one was a bit cheeky back in the Target...

I think vijays bunker shot at the AT&T was the worst if you consider the situation. For just pure uglyness, I think the stenson shot is a winner.

Here is a pretty solid effort.

That's poor work by the TV people.

Putting the Tom Pernice caption up on-screen while the amateur's hitting.

Hang on... rolleyes.gif

yep thats the one i was talking about in my post....good work finding that clip. Now that i watch them all though i thinks stensons 3 woods or maybe vijays skull out of the bunker given the situation are probably the worst.
iyan7
For worst PGA shots, would you nominate Tripp Isenhour's shot at a hawk (it was not an eagle or a birdie).

I realize this wasn't this year, but has anyone ever seen the highlights of the 1964 Masters where Jack hits one off the hosel on the 12th tee? He had a full sand wedge left for his 2nd.

ha, was watching the highlights on the golf channel the other day, that was incredible he completely shanked it and hit it over the wrong side of the creek and had a full wedge to the green...still almost saved par though

It's the clubs fault!!! LOL

Cink is the best and worst so far this year.

The left handed thing was ridiculous and the worst shot of the year imo, but several weeks ago he hit an incredible approach with a driver off the fairway...it was loooong and landed very nicely on the green.
bosox24
This certainly isn't from this year, it's from the PGA a couple of years back and it's too good not to post. Let's just say it's the best use of CBS's swingvision that I've seen yet (Warning: the volume's pretty loud)

He has a bit of a habit of hitting the odd Lucy Locket, does Darren. As do Stenson and Poulter.

I watched him hit one from the 2nd tee on Sunday at Troon back in '97 that had everyone (perhaps Clarke most of all) standing in stunned silence as the ball almost decapitated a dog walker on the beach about 45 degrees and 80 yards off to the right...

I've also seen Stenson hit a few alarmingly-close-to-the-hosel iron shots in my time. I watched Stenson at Wentworth last year, and he must have hit half a dozen shots on the practice ground that had a 'hint of neck' about them. Amazing talent, but wow, he hits some funny shots on occasion.
mcputter
Not to be hating on Calc, cause I like him and when his game's hot he's amazing, but if we're going to go back a few years, his shank/topped #2 iron tee shot into the water on the 17th hole during the last day Ryder Cup singles matches at Kiahwa Island in the midst of blowing about a 5 up lead with 5 to go was one of the worst shots I've ever seen. I'm sure it set his career back for a few years, to his credit it could have been career-wrecking but he's ended up doing pretty well.

You really enjoy this stuff, don't you? cheesy.gif

Any time I see a pro hit a shot that I can genuinely stand back from and say 'I can do that...' I feel warm inside. wink.gif

Any time a multimillionaire who plays golf for a living and drives a hundred grand Ferrari shanks one, we all have a touch of Schadenfreude don't we?

Be honest...

Particularly when they're dressed like Poulter.
slicktry
Stenson's tee shot for sure. VJ was trying to something that is much more difficult than using a tee.

God Bless

I saw some pretty bad shots at the amex @ harding park a couple years back. Chad Campbell hit a fence just left of the tee box on 12 which is like a 20 degree pull and John Daily hit his opening tee shot onto the second tee. Plenty of other shots sucked too, but apparently these choppers can get up and down.

LOL....it just went like that! So much for the STACK & MELT.
