Question is, can I use a piece of wire wrapped under my grip tape to make a rib and use it in tournament play legally (USGA)? This would not be an issue if GP still made the tour wrap with a rib, but this is my only option at this point. Thanks for any input

The USGA allow a slightly raised rib that must be straight and must run the full length of the grip, but the only guidance they give is in one of the FAQs, where they indicate that a coat hanger under the grip would be more than "slightly raised".

Your best bet would be to check with Dallas Golf and see if they still have the ribbed TourWrap in stock. They're still showing them on their website, so they may have some inventory.

Otherwise, I've heard of a number of other ways to make a rib, rolled up double sided tape, smaller diameter wire, etc. I'd think a coat hanger would make a fairly prominent rib, but I recall Nicklaus talking about one of his favorite old putters having been modified by jamming a pencil up the back of the leather grip. I guess the USGA has tightened up the rules a bit.
