Alright so i just turned 16 not so long ago, and today i went into the golf galaxy near my house and asked what the age was that you had to be to work there. The guy said "I want to say 16?" so i did not get a clear answer. For someone who works at golf galaxy, is that the age? And can i just go in and fill out an application to work the floor or do i have to wait until they have like a now hiring floor salesmen sign? Thanks.

you can pretty much work anywhere at the age of 16.....but i doubt they would put you on the sales floor with a lack of experience. i imagine they would have you running the register and cleaning and stocking product. ask to talk to the manager next time
waynevarsity91
thanks a lot Eec i never really thought of asking for the manager, but uh i see your from ohio were do you usually play?

At 16, you probably know more about golf and equipment than most of the people that work there.
waynevarsity91
yeah i think i do actually kind of know a lot for being 16, i mean i went into a local golf warehouse today and asked if this certain type of grip was more like polymer or cord and he had to think about it for like 5 minutes and then finally answered me.

Isn't it scary when you know more about a product than the person working there?

I know, it's really annoying. I'm almost 16, and know more than EVERYONE at my local Golfsmith. No one knows anything at all. And, they say I have to be 18 to work there. russian_roulette.gif

It's the nature of the WRXer man.

Besides, consider it a blessing. You don't want to work there.

We hired a guy a while back....16...plays #1 on his school team.....good character....knows his equipment.......and he's fitting in fine.

My advise to you Jr Boomers looking for that first job (and I'm not assuming the worst of you here) is just make sure you are dressed appropriately and speak professionally when you go looking for a job.

You can't believe the way some people come in and (presumably) hope to get a job.

Good luck,

Mike

I work for GG and you have to be 16 to work here. Also customers will sometimes know more then the workers but that is true every workplace you go. There is a reason GG is #1 and everyone still comes in and shops. best of luck

waynevarsity91
Do you setup interviews with people who want to work there? And can i just go in and ask for an application or do i have to wait till they are hiring?

Does GG have any rules about workers hitting balls while at work? I don't know if I have ever been in there and them not be hitting balls. The local GG has the most uninformed staff possible. There is not one person in there that knows anything.
bigk3520
ask for app
jleclair10
I use to work at GG you just have to know what your doing to work there. I actually worked at the number 1 store in the country. You will most likely be asked to work register before working on the floor at 16 right now is a tough part of the year they will most likely hire again starting Feb or March.
bigk3520
not suppose to hit balls, but sometimes you can't help it

Why would you want to work at a Golf Galaxy at age 16? Personally, I'd think you'd get a hell of a lot more out of working at a golf course at that age.

I found the greatest advantages of working at a course to be free golf and equipment discounts. One of the extra perks were getting in on member's games at other private courses.. lots of invites if you're a stick.

waynevarsity91
yeah i was gonna try to get a job at the golf course right down the street from my house but i don't really know if i want to just gas up and wash the carts, even tho i do get to play for free.

Ive been working at golf galaxy for almost 5 years...... they want you to be able to drive to work.... so basically 16 years old. As far as waiting for a sign to be put up it can go either way. When I got hired as a junior in high school, there was a sign up looking for new people. However, I know we have hired people in the past when there wasnt a sign up. Go in and ask for an application and take it home with you... do not fill it out there. If it at all possible get a person that works there as a reference that can recommend you. F.Y.I., people drop off applications almost everyday..... so you have to make yourself standout. When you go to drop it off, ask to talk to a manager, do not just drop it off with the person working the register. Ask there and then if they are looking for people or not. I can tell you now we hire the most people at the beginning of the season (March, April for OHIO) and in late August when kids go back to college.

Any other questions...... feel free to ask.

Alright thanks lot drewco24 you pretty much gave me all the information i needed, plus a little advice. When you work there are there any benefits or discounts you get?

I understand that most prople who work at these golf stores do not know about upcoming equipment trends and specialty products, but I think people need to remember WRX's represent less than 1% of the golfing population. So, while it is great to know about those matrix oziks, as a employee you will have to explain the differences between maxfli noodles and pinnacle exceptions MUCH more often. The average customer is not a internet golf forum junkie, I think a lot of us forget that when we enter these places.

I agree. I worked 2 years at a country club in the bag room when I was 17 & 18 (20 years ago). The pay sucked, but it was free golf on a top notch course on Monday's, and looking back, working outside was great. Of course, it stinks getting up at 4am on the weekends on the middle of the summer to make sure the carts are lined up for the 6am players!

We did have many "caddyshack" moments:
...A caddy falling into a lake with the player's bag.
...old lions coach Monte Clark backing into the ball picker in a cart, and his bucket of balls goes flying EVERYWHERE
...A fellow bag boy flipping a cart down a path into another lake
...I had a cart lose it's brake at the top of a hill and it went riderless crashing into a fence
...I accidentally ran over a sprinkler head that a greenskeeper left stuck in the pipe. Broke it clean off, flooded #1 fairway before they could shut the main off
...flying down the hill of the range when it's raining, flipping the steering wheel, and you proceed to do 360s down the hill (hey, I was a stupid 17 year old!)

Never had some special GREAT tip from a member. Couple bucks here, couple there, but no one ever dropped more than a fiver.

I can't agree with you more. I personally have been working at GG for over 2 years and trust me, I see the upcoming products at least 6 months before the general public will. It all depends on how good your local reps are. We have some good ones by my store and they always give us sneak peeks and let us demo the product too. I love working for GG.
