The best two public access courses in and around Augusta:

http://www.rivergolfclub.com/

http://www.mountvintage.com/

Really nice area about halfway between Atlanta and Augusta(right off of I-20) in Greensboro, GA(but these are stay and play courses unless you know someone):

http://www.reynoldsplantation.com/golf/courses

http://www.cuscowilla.com/

Here is a nice one off of I-20 closer to Atlanta:

Here is a very reasonably price and very fun state park layout between Augusta and Atlanta near I-20 also:

Harbor Club in Greensboro, GA is one of the best I've played in that area:

I second littlepingman's inclusion of Reynold's Plantation and Cuscowilla also.

No joke, I read security at Augusta National is a joke. Hop the fence and see how many you can get in.

I agree,

You will not be disappointed with Cherokee Run, Palmer design, in the town of Conyers.
