I watched the special on TGC last night with Lee Travino and George Lopez. I really enjoyed it. I have never cared for George Lopez's comedy. He's not very funny to me. However, I really enjoyed hearing him talk about golf and how it has helped him become a better person.

I really think golf does that for a lot of people. It allows a person to make mistakes and learn and become better. It can also allow you to meet new people or be totally by yourself with your thoughts. And the best thing about it is, you don't have to be good to enjoy it. You can be awful and hit one shot that's better than one a PGA pro tried to hit.

I felt he was honest about his game and why he plays golf. It was good to see him and Travino just talking with eachother about this game and their experiences. Hey, I still don't think he's funny, but I appreciate his love for golf.

I thought the special was interesting as well.....seems like they both went through some hard times wen they were younger. I wonder If I was to call Lee up...maybe he would let me come spend the weekend. drinks.gif

I watched the special as well. Although I do enjoy George Lopez and idolized Lee Trevino as a youth already, the special brought a whole new light to me on both of them. It was a great show and really enlightening about life and golf.

It was touching to see the "Merry Mex" and George discuss their beginings and how far the game of golf has taken them.
I was very impressed to see that George has stayed true to his roots.
I do like his comedy, it's raw and very truthful (watch George Lopez: "America's Mexican"), it's hilarious!

There's a good article on the very same subject in the current Golf Digest Equipment Issue.
Great story.

I watched the Lopez/Trevino special and ....thought is was quite contrived honestly...it just seemed like Lopez was looking the bleed every opportunity he could for some reason........How many people had a hard upbringing and struggled thru it to become better????

I love Trevino!!!! In fact I learned more in the 2 minutes of instruction he gave Lopez, than I do with most instructors in a 5 lesson package!

Back on topic... I enjoyed Travino and his coaching of Lopez. His understanding and explaination of the golf swing is really impressive. Makes you think he wasn't just going up and hitting the ball like he jokingly claims.

How about Lee giving George the 54* wedge with "MEX" stamped on it!
Man would I love to sift through the stuff in that garage!!!

couple of things. george lopez is depressed. could he have been a bigger buzzkill? so ponderous. I've seen some of his HBO concert, and there definitely are some laughs in it, but in this show he seems like kind of a bummer. maybe he's medicated. I mean, he's driving over to lee trevino's pad to hang out, and then to play some golf - he should be all excitement but instead gets emotional and sad about every little thing. waaaaah.

the other thing is lee trevino is a terrific guy and it looks like he's still got game.
bstevens2008
leave it up to golf to bring the turn-coats and mexicans together. i love this game!!
DEGOINS
The show was ok. It seemed like they were using the show to validate why Lopez is hosting the Hope Classic. In my opinion they fell short. I'm still not convinced that Lopez has been playing for 30 years and his swing still sucks that bad!

For those of you that missed the special with Trevino & Lopez - check the Golf Channel website for the next showing. I thought it was a unique way of showing how golf leads each one of us in an unique strange way... I have a lot of respect for Mr. Trevino as a person and a golfer. IMO the best ball striker in his era/possible history - with a swing that would make the "modern" golf instructor cringe!

I would love to hear everyone's take on Trevino/Lopez.
Ace In The Hole
Both seem to have become great people, I know Lee has not always been the best Dad/Husband, but I think he has dealt with his demons and is now a better man than he is golfer, which one could have said was the exact opposite in the 80's. I thought it was a very entertaining show, and I think both Trevino, and Lopez have allot to be proud of to have what they do from what they came from, they abviouslly get great pleasure in each others company which I found very touching, you could see how how proud they both are of each other.

I hope I get to see it.

Trevino the total extrovert on the course that used to hide in his motel room call room service for dinner and beer when he was not playing.

He is like two different people.

pshyeah
Great show. Two good guys, who look like they care about what they do.

I thought that it was one of the best programs that TGC has shown in some time, not to mention Rich Learner had nothing to do with it. I actually watched two times last night, because I thought that it was that good. Growing up as a young golfer, Lee Trevino was my favorite golfer and still is, not to mention all the unique clubs he used throughtout his life. Way to go TGC for finally putting on some a program worth watching. Just my $.02

What an inspiring show. George Lopez mentions that he also is an introvert until he gets on stage or in front of the camera which amazes me how people can be so different. George sees Lee as the father he never had and Lee probably had very little idea on what being a dad was like because he as well as George didn't grow up with his dad. Cudos to TGC for putting that on last night and 15 times today. friends.gif

One of the best programs I have seen in awhile. It is amazing what this game does for people.

I couldn't agree more. I loved it. Half way through I called my brother to tell him he had to watch it. I'm of mexican decent so it made the piece even better for me. Great job Golf Channel. How good of a narrator is Jim Huber! clapping.gif

Initial thread cleaned, put back on topic and merged with 2nd thread started on the same topic.

Guys..keep it on topic please.

Being from a large hispanic/multi-racial family, I enjoyed every moment of the show and it brought to light the idea that golf is for everyone and coming from a "Latin" or other ethinic background has nothing to do with loving golf.

Mr. Trevino is to this day my grandfathers favorite player and it is only because of his heart, compassion, and generosity for others not that he is of the same culture. George is the same way and he vocalized a lot of the things that I saw as a boy growing up through his humor and reflection, I can relate largly to what both of them went through and more so to my grandpa and all of his 8 kids including my mom.

I took a good deal from the show about George and it shows Lee's character and level of exceptance towards George who views Lee as a father figure.

It was a great segment that TGC aired.
Shortknocker
anybody know when the next airing will be?

I could listen to Lee Trevino talk golf all day ... this George Lopez could go away

Lee to Lopez " your goal today is to only hit 3 people ( spectators) " cast in stone........LOL

I enjoyed the show, thought it was interesting how they both grew up, and how they have both made something of themselves. Even though Trevino's swing isn't the prettiest he will go down as one of the all time great ball strikers.

I'm like an earlier poster, I could listen to Trevino talk golf all day. One of my all time favorite quotes is from Trevino ----- If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron.”
hawaiigolfer999
You obviously didn't understand the theme of the show. The show was showing the side of these two men that you don't get to see when they are "on stage".

I'm sure if George was smiling and making jokes about these painful memories in his life you would have criticized that too. I felt we were seeing someone's real emotions about going back to where it started. George really got Lee to talk about things he doesn't normally talk about. Lee Trevino is a very private person. It was great to see the "real" men behind their career personas. There was obvious caring and respect between them.

And if I remember correctly, he got struck by lightning a few months later.

This was probably the best show I've ever seen on TGC. It was real and you could see the love and respect they have for each other.
