Santa Clara Muni isn't bad.

Cinnabar Hills is the best public course in San Jose IMO. It's $105, cart included, on the weekends, but there are 27 holes and they utilize two different combinations per day = faster play times usually.
My second favorite course around here is
San Juan Oaks in Hollister, about 30-40 min. away but definitely worth the drive. I believe the weekend rate here is $80 + cart, but they almost always have deals on
Golfnow.com.
Santa Teresa and Santa Clara Muni's are good courses, but be prepared for a 5+ hour round on weekends. For a list of courses in the area with ratings, visit

If I were to pick between those two, it'd be Cinnabar hands down. Great layout, no houses or freeways, superb conditioning, greens are FAST. It's going to be tougher for the beginner golfer, there are quite a bit of forced carries, but if you play the right tees it shouldn't be a problem.
The Tournament course at Coyote is nice. It's a Jack Nicklaus course, so it's fairly wide open for your tee shots with the emphasis being put on the approaches. Conditioning is excellent, as is the customer service. It gets windy here in the afternoon. The biggest drawback here is being adjacent to HWY 101, a busy freeway, so it can be pretty noisy on a couple holes, but not too severe. You really can't go wrong with either of these.
Don't play the Valley course at Coyote, totally not worth it.

I did both Cinnabar and Coyote back on November.......Cinnabar is the way to go. Its out in the middle of nowhere and the greens are wicked fast. Coyote Creek reminded me of a muni course and was not worth $100 IMO.

Another good one near the city is The Ranch Golf Club.

IMO the word "good" and Ranch should not be used in the same sentence unless NOT is in front of good. Cinnabar hands down.

Totally agree. I live 5 min. from the Ranch but have only played there a handful of times. Play it if you want to say you played the course with the highest slope in the Bay Area, otherwise, stay far far away.
