Full Version: Bettinardi Black Carbon Series Putter Review
GolfWRX.com > Community Encyclopedia of Golf > Flatsticks and Putter Talk
PutterTalk.com

Back in January, I was in Chicago visiting Bettinardi’s “Studio B” and got to see a sneak-preview of the new Mizuno line they were working on. The putters were unfinished. There were variations of the heads scattered all over Bob’s office. His right-hand-man Keith had CAD drawings marked up and piled by his monitor. Bob remarked at one point “I want this to just scream quality. That is what my market expects.”

Over the next several months, I’d visit Bob from time to time, and see several more variations of the new Mizuno line. Necks were shorter, bumpers shaped differently, sample grips were scrutinized. Last month we were sitting in his office, surrounded by putters and there were three heads on his desk. The BC1, BC2, and BC3. All perfectly finished.

Doug: “Are these the finished product?”

Bob: “Yes sir…those are the first 3.”

Doug: “Where do they go from here?”

Keith: “Now you get to tell us what YOU think.”

Keith then shafted, gripped, and shipped the first three finished BC series putters to Putter Talk for review.

Craftsmanship:
Known the workd over for the attention to detail, Bob Bettinardi doesn’t put out a product unless it adheres to VERY stringent QC standards. After he’s done, it goes to Mizuno HQ in Japan for further scrutiny. The BC Series putters are no exception. From the solid-ingot that each putter is produced from, to the tenth-gram that each head is weighed in at, no one can dispute the level of craftsmanship that goes into each and every putter that Bettinardi’s name goes on.

The Black Carbon putters are the first time a retail putter has had the Patented “Feel Impact Technology Face” (FIT Face) that Bettinardi developed earlier this year.

The F.I.T Faceā„¢ milled area dramatically reduces the surface area of where the ball makes contact with the face and in turn delivers an extremely solid and soft feel to every putt.

After a putter has the Honey-Comb pattern milled into the face, it goes through another step that adds the ‘railroad’ tracks to the sweet spot. This “insert-less insert” is a small series of millings that change the auditory feedback the putter produces when striking a ball. The result is a very soft ‘feel’ that gets the ball rolling real fast.

Also new on the Black Carbon series is the black finish that is plated to the carbon steel. This finish doesn’t glare in the sun, and won’t rust. Best of both worlds? You bet. We found that the contrast that the black putter made against the white ball, and the lack of glare helped in concentration while putting. With a lot to think about when aligning a 6-footer to make your buddy buy lunch, the last thing you want to think about is squinting your eyes.

Material:
A solid block of 12L14 Carbon Steel is milled into a putter at the Bettinardi studio in Tinely park, just outside of Chicago. If you ever visit Studio B, you’ll be able to watch putters come off the line…and the ridiculous amount of scrap metal that follows.

Milling from 12L14 offers a great mix of hardness and mill-ability. The Black Carbon plating procedure isn’t thick enough to change the auditory dynamics of the putter, and offers protection against the elements.

Headcover / Grip:
The BC Series headcovers don’t use the standard AM&E headcover we’ve seen on Bettinardi putters in the past. This time, Mizuno designed a headcover that would allow them to do more than just draw a stitching pattern on a headcover that everyone else is using. The result is a very nice headcover that protects the head, and matches the Yellow-Black theme of the line.

I’ll say that it’s not my FAVORITE headcover of all time, but I’d expect that the next revision will be better. Not that there was anything specifically wrong with this one, it just was a little big in some places, and not big enough in others.

Notable features are that the individual headcovers are marked with the model numbers of the putters they hold. Pretty funny when all three putters initially shipped to me with BC3 headcovers.

The special “Honey-Comb” grip extends the Yellow/Black theme of the package. The attention to detail shows.

Address:
At address, the three putters have their own characteristics. The BC1 looks like your standard Anser 2 style head, with an off-set neck that disappears into the shaft.

The BC2 is more of a traditional Blade with a generously thick flange that holds a thin flange line for alignment. If your head isn’t over the ball on the BC2, you’ll see the white paint-fill of the word “Bettinardi” on the back of the flange. This is distracting, but forces you to keep the putter back where it should be. (You need to have the putter a good 4″ forward to see it…which is a healthy press.)

Looking at the BC3 next to the other two putters shows that it is a very compact design. The BC3 is a interesting evolution of the standard “mallet putter” that a lot of companies push as an afterthought. A wide and deep back coupled with a double-bend shaft offers a clean look at address. The sightline pops out at you to help align the ball correctly at impact. The last mallet putter that I used on any consistent basis was a Zebra back in the 1990s. I could see this putter as a good replacement for that style head.

“Skip to the end” Overall:
There is a lot of competition in the “$300 Putter” marketplace these days. With an innovation like “FIT Face”, you really need to make sure that it’s done right the first time. You don’t get a second chance at something like this. If someone spends $300 on a putter and it doesn’t work, they won’t be back to buy “Round II” when you get it figured out.

Any of these putters would surpass even the most skeptical golfers expectations. With the testing that Bettinardi and Mizuno have been doing both in-house, and with their tour players over the last year, this design is VERY ready for prime-time. With each of the three heads available in several lengths and weights, there is bound to be a putter for every golfer in the Black Carbon series. The quality of the product and attention to detail offer a complete package that is well worth the price of admission. If the Mizuno/Bettinardi relationship is working out this well after only 18 months, the coming years are going to be very exciting in the high-end putter market.

I will have the BC 1 within the month, these are such ggod looking putters, and I bet the performance, and feel are off the charts.

Bettinardi is the new Scotty Cameron for me betty.gif

I love his putters, the design is flawless, attention to detail unique and on top of that outstanding quality and feel wub.gif betty.gif wub.gif

His honesty is also unique within this highly competitive market. To hear him say that he still does not think the head covers from Mizuno are perfect is just a sure sign of Bettinardi's honesty - way to go ok.gif

BEAUTIFUL! Great looking putters

Great review...cant wait to get my hands on these.
Mr. Doug
They hit stores this week.

When I talked to Bob earlier in the day, he mentioned that the WILL be expanding the BC line in the future, but wasn't able to comment about the additions yet.

I had a lot of fun testing these putters. I think he has a hit.
MikeJohnson
They had one at Edwin Watts today.

Great looking flatties and having tried one at a Mizuno Demo Day a couple of months ago, I can say they're all that a $300 putter is supposed to be. Soft feel, ballanced, and extremely nice finish. If you've got a Christmas Wish List - MOVE THIS TO THE TOP!

Nice review, however when I look at that putter something tells me TOO MUCh going on. Needs to be simpler....

If I buy one, the yellow paint is gone, but with the exception of the 'FIT Face' engraving on the toe, I think the markings are pretty good. Lose the yellow border around the FIT Face, swap the rest of the yellow for red and we have a deal.

The BC2 looks awesome.

prudy1006
anyone know what the toe hang is for the #2?
Gxgolfer
The 2 and the Mallet are almost perfectly face balanced. It looks like about 3:30 to me.

but that's just me :P

33" BC-1 on order, comes in Friday!!!! partytime2.gif

wow, i want both bc-1 and bc-2.

scratch that. i need both.
Big Ben
Screams pure quality! Best looking Bettinardi's I've ever seen. I ordered the #2/33' sight unseen because I could tell the availability would be low based on demand.

I have been able to hold and try all three models. I have played a BB16, BB24, and 340CW. These BC putters are outstanding. The feel is unique, very solid and much softer than you would expect. Roll is great. Distance control is great. I was planning on locating a BB10, but think I will go with the BC2. The black finish is outstanding.

I agree 100% on the black finish; best I've seen since the Circle T's.

Believe me, I pray at night.

I have taken a liking to photoshop lately. I've been flipping all these RH flatsticks so they appear left handed ...then I just wish and admire laugh.gif

I ordered a 34" BC-1 from tgw.com last week. It was supposed to ship on 10/26, it got pushed back to 10/30 and now today my order status says "on backorder, awaiting updated shipping date" sad.gif

Anyone know where I can get my hands on one NOW? I live in the Northeast and we probably have only 1 month left of golf if the snow arrives late for the season......

Last time I saw the Mizuno rep around here, he said Canadians may not see these putters around, since the first line wasn't so hot selling. I hope I can get my hands on the BC-3, from address it looks MUCH better than I was anticipating for a mallet.
Konklifer
Finish is incredible. All three look great. Can't wait to try them and see more models.
Boonie
That BC-2 looks sensational.

I'm really enjoying these putter reviews, thanks guys. All the right info and some great 'set-up' pictures which are too often ignored.
jick
I hope this reply doesn't get deleted for not being "factual or supported by good evidence." Anyway, just based on my observation, it seems like the finish is not the standard fare black oxide but more of a teflon coating that makes it much more durable and immune to rust. I'd have to give props to Bettinardi for creating such a putter - although this is pure hearsay on my part in guessing what that finish is.

I think the C-01 and C-02 models are not yet released in this black, because the current ones are still doing pretty well and there is still a lot of stock of it in the stores. My guess is that when the inventory runs out or come fall next year, an Anser-type with plumbers' neck will be released!

I can't wait! Kudos to Bettinardi for this wonderful putter and technology!

I agree.

I bought the new Charcoal Mist Circa'62 in the believe that it couldn't rust, if taken properly care of. It rusted after contact with some fertilizer on a puttting green. None of my other putters had rusted from contact with this fertilizer, but my Circa '62 Charcoal mist did

I think Bettinardi is on to something here with this finish on the black carbon steel putter though. Only time will tell if it will hold up against the deadly toxic fertlizer, that my Circa '62 Charcoal mist could't stand smile.gif

I was killing some time on Friday night at the local PGATour Superstore, and did a lot of practice putting with the BC1, 34". Beautiful finish, great looking putter. However, I kinda thought the feel was a little TOO soft, almost couldn't tell I'd hit the ball. That being said, I think these will be a huge success, and I almost pulled the trigger on one. I think I'm going to have to go with a C&L 350, though, as soon as they start making a similar hosel.

Thanks for the great pics and the write up.

Beautiful putters. The BC-1 is on my list.
Bat
I can't wait to try these. They look awesome with the FIT Face and Black finish. Definitely a winner in my book as far as appearance is concern.

In a 2 part, 26+minute interview with Today's Golfer Magazine (A U.K. mag), Bob mentioned that there will be a release of a BC-4, which is much like the BC-3, but with a Center Shaft! Great for us pendulum type swingers.

By the way at Not allowed Per Todaysgolfer's UK request is the best Golf Mag available if you are into equipment. They also have videos with Nick Dougherty, Jerry Kelly and Colin Montgomerie, as they go through the clubs in their bags. Great stuff.

WOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!! partytime2.gif

I just picked up from the SuperStore my new BC-1 33"!!!

Spent twenty minutes putting in the store on their warped putting surface (they would sell more putters without the weird ridges throughout!) and the feel and speed is perfect!
I really like the fact that the 33" is 355g; makes the putter feel fantastic!

I'll write more after I take her out to the practice facility tomorrow. For now, I'll practice on my Targaline in my office.
wsaenotsock
I'm very jealous. smile.gif I've been waiting for a 33" BC-2 to show up somewhere. The headweight on my C-03h is around 354g and it feels really good.

I was told by the guys at PGASS that they were not going to get any 33"s of the BC line in the store and the only way I would be able to get one would be to order.
Big Ben
I'm playing the 33' BC2 now; extremely nice putter. Feels very soft off of the face and rolls the ball true. The look is fantastic but the yellow and bird on the face is to busy so I will be removing the paintfill soon. Also, the headcover is very cool looking but technically it's aweful. I replaced the win grip (which actually wasn't that bad) with a custom black/yellow dancing Gripmaster leather grip...awesome look and superior feel in my opinion. Overall; this is an extremely high quality Bettinardi offering.

I don't notice the face of the putter when I'm putting, so the face doesn't bother me.
What headcover are you using? I am always looking for cool new headcovers!

This new line is just awesome. They have a Tour version of this putter at Studio B. They just wont let me have it smile.gif

I just sold some pretty cool Betti covers.

Center Shaft! I hope it is a true centershaft. The 360MB I tried so much to like didn't make the grade because it wasn't a "true centershaft".

I have been telling people as far back as 3 years ago, the Black Thunder finish of Bett is the best black/dark finish on putters in terms of durability. I agree with Jick, it is more of a teflon type coating.
