I picked up one of the limited edition Ping Craz-e putters not too long ago with the black inserts. I talked to BOS about what they thought could happen with doing black oxide on it. The insert is very tricky to work with, and I face the risk of being broke in the process. I decided to go ahead and take that risk and see how this one of a kind could turn out. They told me after taking a look at it that it is not Carbon Steel, so I'm not exactly sure what it is made of. A shiny finish on the sole was not possible is all I know. It is supposed to come out all more of a matte black. I've taken the pictures of the actual club and done a rough photoshop of how I expect it to turn out. I think that this should be a pretty cool experiment for them, let me hear some thoughts.
**The black craz-e pictured on the right of the photos is not real, they are photoshoped. I will post pictures in a couple weeks of the actual putter when it arrives back to me**

As long as it comes back in playable condition (insert still intact), I will be selling it unused. BOS just confirmed they got it on the 12th so I'm probably looking at around the end of October to get it back. It should look pretty sweet. Anyone interested can shoot me a PM with offers I guess, but it will be up in the BST once available (if available...keep the fingers crossed

)
I don't know why Ping doesn't produce these in all black, I think it looks much more appealing at address...at least by looking at some photoshop pics

That's great, I've never heard that before but it's true if you look from the right direction.

Very nice....
I've been tempted to pick up on the the "black insert" Craz-E's. But I've got a question, does the "black" insert feel any different that the "blue" insert? - Thanks for any feedback

I have not had both of them on hand at the same time, but I'm nearly certain that they are th exact same just different colors. I used to play the blue G2i for 3 years and thought it felt fine, but when I switched back to this after a season of milled putters it just doesn't do it for me anymore. I am pretty sure it's the same though.

Here's a little update:
FYI for anyone who wanted to know, the G2i Ping Craz-e has ball bearings installed with the shaft to securely hold them in place. I don't know if this means all G2i putters are this way, or possibly all newer Ping's, but for sure the G2i Craz-e does.
Now the reason I bring this up is because BOS was unable to remove the shaft to get the head refinished. They took it to a local Pro Shop where they were informed about the ball bearings. Ping will do a complete re-shaft for $28.00, but they don't reuse shafts. That price includes installing a brand new one w/ grip.
With that said, I'm waiting to hear back from Monica about what we're going to do. I don't see this project continuing on, but it hasn't been officially decided yet. I really want to see this one turn out, so I'll keep you all posted.

Those stupid ball bearings are the biggest pain of all time. I believe all the G2i series had them. I tried to pull a shaft and it took forever.

Pity that a ball bearing may to stop what looks like a cool project.
never really cared for the putter ( In fact when I first saw one I thought it's best use would be branding cattle ) but the photoshoped pics have made me reconsider.
I hope you can somehow make it happen.

Well, here's the latest news. I informed Monica over at BOS what Ping told me, and I gave them the go to break, bend, destroy, or whatever they want to the shaft if they're able to get it off. I'll then just have Ping re-shaft it myself after the head makes it back to me. Otherwise if they can't get the shaft off it would need to be sent out to Ping to remove, back to BOS for the black oxide, back to Ping for the shaft, back to BOS again, then back to me. Way too much time, costs, and effort into that approach.
Monica told me that the Pro is gone for the day but we'll know more tomorrow after she informs him a little more "force" can be used if need be. So, hopefully they can pull it off somehow!

Pings have had ball bearing shafts for a long time. There is a trick to removing them the way Ping does it.
Tell Monica here's the secret: Put it in a freezer overnight, then pull it out and immediately hit it with a torch, that will release the seal with the ball bearing. More force will only break or damage something.
Also, tell her that Byron Morgan sends his hopes that his latest batch of putters are coming along smoothly.

Yes, but it involves a tub of Crisco, 3 goats, a set of jumper cables, and a personal floatation device.
Best to let them do it methinks.

Thanks Drew, hopefully this proves quite helpful!

Oh wow, I would definitely leave that one up to them if this were the case. Maybe Ping should include this as a warning with their putters:
If you dare re-shaft, you will need the following items:
1. (1) Tub of Crisco
2. (3) Goats
3. (1) Jumper Cables
4. (1) PFD
5. Good Luck

The secret tub of Crisco and the 3 goats... that was NOT the secret I had in mind.

In conclusion to your shaft removal trick Drew, they said it didn't end up working. August even purchased some Liquid Nitrogen and said it just wouldn't come off. So, I told them it really isn't that big of deal and the Craz-e is getting sent back to me now. It was a fun thought of a project while it lasted, and the efforts of BOS have been amazing...especially the communication from Monica.
If anyone is interested in a brand new limited edition black Ping Craz-e let me know. It should be up in the BST next week or so.

bummer.
On an unrelated subject, in my experience goats can serve as crisco, jumper cables ,
and personal flotation devices.

After it's all done and over with, I just wanted to give a huge thanks to Black Oxide Services for all the continued efforts they put into trying to make this project work. The customer service is unbelievable. I don't think they have anyone online here, but thanks to Monica, August, and anyone else who worked on this.
