So I'm a 10 handicap coming off the best game of my life. Finally broke 80 last week by shooting 79 at a course that I had only played once prior. Got off to an ugly start shot 44 on the front thanks to a triple bogey but then was on FIRE on the back and shot 35 (which is one under par for the back) by hitting all GIR and missing only 1 fairway. I never even knew I had a 35 for 9 in me.

So today I am pretty stoked about playing...can't wait to get to the number 1 tee and I start off with a gorgeous drive but struggle the rest of the round and end up with 99...What the heck?!?!??!

I don't know how I went from 79 to 99 and I know it was nowhere near my typical round but gosh this game really erks me at times...but I still love it and I have a tee time set for Tuesday to make it up to myself.

Thanks for letting me rant!

Been there done that.

This is one of those games in which one day you come out and everything just seems to flow in the right direction. After those days it makes you excited to back out and do it all over again only to run into one of those blwo up rounds where it seems like nothing is going right.

Those rounds are the most trying of all though as you know you can play better, but yet something is wrong and you can't figure it out.

Well said! If it were too easy none of us would probably play. It's that potential that keeps us coming back. My worst round this year was a 104, my best was a 72. Don't you just love this game? laugh.gif
FLAis4golferz
yep. I shot 52, 40 on thursday. I feel your pain... gotta love golf...

I hate this game, well got to get some rest playing early tomorrow and Monday morning!

Yes, it is the ultimate love/hate relationship. I love this game so much, but man...I've come so close to quitting so many times. My swing has been in a funk all summer...and now as winter is coming, I've "figured" it out.

Gotta love (and hate) this crazy game!

Nice shooting on the 79. Don't sweat it man, it comes and goes. I hit 9/9 fairways over 250 with my driver last week playing 13 holes in the evening on a tough track. Next 2 rounds I was yanking it left really bad. Got beat 3 and 1 by my buddy on Fri. and couldn't get off the tee at all. At the range the day prior to that round, 2 dozen drives dead perfect carrying over 250, day after (today) same thing, dead straight and even ramped it up to near 270 carry. Drives me up a wall, how the heck do I know what I'm doing wrong on the course when my range sessions consist of about 6 bad shots out of 300. russian_roulette.gif

Good luck Tues. I've got a rematch on Mon. biggrin.gif

Know exactly how you feel. A few weeks ago I was playing great -just automatic, no thinking.

I took a couple of weeks off and when I went out for 9 holes Thursday, I lost balls on 4 holes in a row and including 'Tin Cupping' 3 in the water from 100 frigging yards to a island green..... mad.gif

Exactly why we all love this game.
Exactly why pro tournaments are usually 4 rounds instead of one.
Even the weekend 2 rounder for amateur golf is plenty tough.
This is why we got hooked for so many years and still not sick of it.
Yes, you are hooked for life.

I know your pain. Last week, playing the back tees waaaay the hell back with ridiculous wind. I ended up playing ok, but still shot 43. For the back nine, wind died down a little and I got my focus back. I absolutely destroyed the course and shot 30.
Well isn't that nice, a smooth +1, 73. drag.gif

Yeah, we all know wat your talking about. Recently i've been scoring around 3-6 over on the front nine and then go onto the back, everything is back into shape and I shoot 1 under to 3 over. All I need to do on the front is to put myself into position to hit GIR and make putts and I'd be off 3 or 4. Don't sweat it though. I know it'll come, and you know it'll come, so practice in between to make it come faster.

That is what keeps everyone coming back....if it was easy, everyone would have taken up another "more challenging" sport by now.....

An avid golfer and 36 handicapper dies, goes to heaven and plays golf every day; always pars every hole. After two weeks he goes to the Starter and says "I never thought I'd say this but I'm getting bored always shooting exactly par. Maybe Heaven isn't for me."

The Starter replies "What makes you think this is Heaven?"

trek1500
Yeah..it's the nature of the game...

The pursuit of that perfect round!
jessicaalbatross
this is why we keep coming back!

Nothing is more irritating that that. Go practice and hit 98% of shots really nicely. Go to my lesson or play the next day and it seems like every ball I strike hits the toe or I top. ARGH!
I tell my instructor, "I really do practice.", while feeling like an idiot.
He tells me everyone has bad days, even the pros, the only difference is that their bad shots are generally still really good.

It is the two nice shots in 100 that keep me coming back. Ouch.

And it happens within the same game, sometime... Well... In every game biggrin.gif

I've had this on again off again relationship for the better part of 30 years. I gone from a 1 to a 9 and back again and again. Now that I know if I don't put the work into the game on a regular bases I am going to be a 9, 75 one day, 82 on average and few 90's in there to just try my patience. I enjoy the game more now than before, because I don't take it to seriously any more. russian_roulette.gif

Yeah I can totally connect to this:

2 Weeks ago I played one of my better tournament rounds of the year and shot 84 at the tightest course I have ever seen, oh and did I mention it was snowing most of the round?

Last week I had the two worst scores of my golfing season. Shot a 101 and a 95 respectively on a 7300 Monster with 50 MPH gusts.

UGH!

Yep, I go out an shoot a three under one day and 10 over a few days later.

The funny thing is, mentally or emotionally I often don't feel all that different after a "great" round v. a crappy round. No matter when I play, there is always that 1 putt that should have dropped, that wedge that flew 1 yard over the green and took a crappy bounce into neverland, or that drive that looked great from the tee but ran through the fairway. On the flip side, whenever I play I always hit at least 1 beautiful iron, make a decent putt, and hit that one 2-yrd draw drive that has me giddy. My dad, a total duffer, always says he's satisfied with his round if he hits only 1 good shot. I wouldn't go that far, but the idea is right.

The takeaway - we ALWAYS leave strokes on the course, and the course ALWAYS gives us a few. Yes, this never really helps in the moment, but on the drive home the steam gets let out, and an hour after I swore I would take a month off from golf I'm back watching the Golf Channel and looking at my schedule for the next possible tee-time.
