Hi, I have a question about how others take care of their putters.
I have just sent my scotty cameron to custom shop because it was very much banged up,
and was wondering how others do when they play?
Do you take the putter head cover off only when putting and put'em on again,
or do you just take the cover off on hole 1 and just play the entire course, then put'em back on when you are finished (which is what I do).
Thank you for the reply and all the great info on the forum.

Both putter and driver get covered after every use. My first putter taught me how banged up they can get just bouncing around with the other clubs.

My cart bag has a dedicated putter well that keeps it well separated and then I take the head cover off and leave it off for the entire 18.
When I carry, with my lighter weight carry bag, I always leave the cover on except when putting.
So for me, it is 50-50 depending on bag. I've had this current ping putter for 2 years and it still looks in very good shape.

Always on when not in use. Same with the woods. I hate bag chatter on a putter!!!!

Always.
As much to protect the irons as the putter.
I don't mind iron-on-iron bag chatter but the putter makes big chonks in the hosels... Not good.

Based on my recent putting I may leave it while putting aswell.

Yep, everything gets covered. I walk a lot and all the bag dings would be like looking down at a disco ball's light refraction!

Headcover always on while not in use. If you take the cover off after the first hole and don't put it on until your done, why even have the headcover? Its not like it's going to get abused sitting in your trunk. Sorry for the rant but I work at a course and my biggest pet peeve is loading someones bag only to see them remove every cover and place them in the basket of the cart, then ask for the covers to be put back on before the clubs go back in storage. Sorry it's just something that really gets to me for some reason.

All of my headcovers come off just long enough to make the shots/putts and then right back on.

I've got a putter well on my bag and it doesn't touch the other clubs while I play, so I keep it off. I'd use one with any other bag.

My bag has a seperate putter well so I leave it off. One has to be careful about the putter cover retaining moisture here in the Pacific Northwet.

This is an interesting question because a lot of people are obviously confused about the purpose of headcovers. I've played with guys that pull the clubs from their trunk with headcovers on. This is the same trunk where their clubs lay, do not move and don't bang together. They then go to number one tee and commence to take every headcover off, throw them in the basket on the cart and don't put them back on until they get back to their car. The whole round the clubs are clanging and banging and generally just beating the crap out of each other.
For all that don't know...HEADCOVERS ARE MEANT TO BE USED ON THE GOLFCOURSE...NOT IN THE TRUNK. If you don't intend to use them on the course where you need them, just throw them away.

Only off long enough to use the club. Does anyone hear use iron covers? Keeps them looking new.

Same here. I find it ridiculous how some people take them off, and the clubs are banging around getting dings and dents. I've given up on ironcovers, but I ALWAYS keep the woods and putter covered unless I'm playing the shot.
And.....all my Camerons look fantastic after plenty of play/practice.

I'll leave it off if the putter isn't performing well. I put it in "time out" with the other clubs. When it starts making putts, I'll put the cover back on it.
Gotta teach that putter who's boss.

Haha, most people I know just swap the putter out if it needs a "time out."
Not subject it to dings and scratches!

Funny to see this topic. I am a putter nut with a pretty nice collection of putters. I have gone to an old ping scottsdale anser because I am sick and tired of putter covers.

I've had forged irons get scratched in the trunk where they rub on one another. I'd rather have bag marks than scratches on the faces, or a "sweetspot mark" on the toe of my 4 iron.
That's why people do that. They're not confused at all.

Yes. My putter is milled. So I use the cover to protect the face.

What if you had some sort of leash on the putter cover with a loop to the bag and think of a phone coil cord? Then the putter cover could be dropped to avoid carrying it to the hole and never lost? call it the "putter leash" or cover leash or leash me alone or something.... I stuff it in my pocket but it annoys me but otherwise it would get lost while walking.

They just need to start (right now) making bags that have a dedicated putter well or putter protection system. Even a sleeve or something on the outside of the bag.

I always use my putter cover unless for some reason I decide to use my $5 Ray Cook - then it does not matter.

I have a dedicated putter well on my ogio bag but I still used to use a cover anyway, then I got a 2 ball putter and realized that the cover sucked putting on and off so I ditched it and now don't use one. My putter doesn't come close to anything so it isn't a problem. If it had a chance to hit something then I would protect it same as my woods.

Woods & Putter get covered up after each use.
Especially the Newport & Bettinardi's. I spent too much $$ to allow the the faces to get dinged or nicked. I have a difficult time enough putting, that I don't need them marred.
My friends mock me, but what the h3ll do they know. They don't even clean the grass/dirt off their irons after they hit out of the rough.
