I was surprised to see how many people disagreed with one of my posts that suggested Tiger (and all players) had every right to choose what events they play and that they didn't have to support the Fedex Cup. Most people thought the players were "greedy", "didn't support the tour" and in general, were selfish and werent doing their part. What a load of rubbish. Now Tiger has won I wonder what these people will find to whine about?

By taking a week off Tiger recharged the batteries and has restored interested in the final event. I don't think he would of shot 63 in the final round if he played 3 weeks in a row, and anybody who's played competitive golf knows that its mentally draining to play that many weeks in a row and be at your best.

I'd like to see Tiger (not really, but hypothetically), choose to sit out the final event and see what people in here had to say then! Some people have no idea of the hours and sacrifices the worlds top athletes put themselves through to be where they are. The players can do whatever they want for whatever reason - they earned it.

So you're saying Tiger has no chance to win this week? Using your "3 weeks in a row" being "mentally draining", I suppose Phil Mickelson is the favorite at East Lake. Tiger played last week in Boston, this week in Chicago and is headed to Atlanta. Phil took this week off, so his batteries should be recharged, right?

I'm not trying to stir up any crap, but when Tiger drives the ball the way he did today and makes every freaking putt he lines up, there's not a player on this earth that can keep up with him, batteries recharged or not. He had his "A" game today, and most of the week shooting all 4 rounds in the 60's with ZERO 3-putts.

Badds threw a 66 at him and Stricker threw a 68 at him, but Tiger still won by 2.

DEGOINS
Tiger is at a level of his own. When he has his "A" game theres nobody that can beat him. Last week his putting was off yet he still came in second and only by 2 shots to the worlds number 2. I for one enjoy every minute of watching Tiger play. When it's all said and done the records will all be his!

I know! At least have the decency to contact Gxgolfer in private. wink.gif

I honestly don't care about Tiger or Phil taking a week off each. I think it exposes a flaw in the system as it stands, which is good. It also gives some weight to the Tour Championship, which is definitely what the PGA wants, not a simple 1 or 2-horse-race that it would have been had everyone played each week. But really, what more would Stricker have to do to be in first place? Skip a week? biggrin.gif

No need for name calling. rolleyes.gif Plus, this was posted around 1am your time. How much time has to pass? In another few hours it's going to be on the front page on your doorstep anyway.

Appreciated, but really--if I were 8-10 hours behind on watching a tournament, reading a golf forum, I don't think I'd be too surprised to see some results leaked--kind of like if reading the HarryPotterWRX.com before finishing the books. biggrin.gif Either way--spoiler removed from the title. Hopefully it didn't ruin it too much for you (still some good golf to watch). bye.gif

Hope I am not giving it away too soon, but today is Monday and coming up after that is Tuesday.

The topic has been discussed here and other message boards ad nauseum. When the tournament is over and if you do not want to know the details, then stay off the internet.

So naive.

Ah... yeah, u make some good points! what I was meaning to say was playing 4 weeks in a row is mentally draining, kinda like reading all the replies to a topic like this! However, I was, unlike your good self, trying to stir a little so I expected a few attacks! It just seems to me I've read a lot of comments on Tiger, Phil and Ernie choosing to skip these events and people have suggested that they're not supporting the tour...

Oh sorry 'bout that! Don't worry, I've been called much worse things...this brings up another point about the FedEx Cup, and that is...I choose to look at the result as soon as I woke up (Thailand time), rather than wait 30 minutes and watch the tape. Would I ever do that for a major? No way! Part of what I was trying to say is that I personally dont think the FedEx Cup is a big deal and neither do the players, well at least Tiger and Phil. That's not to say they don't care, but just to say the best players in the world are really only interested in the majors and while it's a good idea (the cup), I don't think the tour can realistically expect the players to aply all for events and be at their best at the end of a season...

I agree with you 100% on the discussions surrounding ANY player skipping an event, not just Tiger, Phil or Ernie. If memory serves me correctly, Scott Verplank skipped one of the FedEx Cup events. Where's the crying and moaning about that?

Bottom line is that these guys are independent contractors and can make their own schedule...well, at least to a certain extent. If Tiger doesn't want to play in the Honda, Nissan or Chrysler because GM / Buick is one of his sponsors, then so be it. Same thing with the FedEx Cup events.

I won't be surprised if the Tour changes things around a bit to basically force everyone eligible to play. IMO this FedEx Cup is Finchem's baby, and he wants it to succeed so bad he'll do just about anything to make it happen.

All that said, it's gonna be fun watching Tiger, Phil and Stricker shoot it out this weekend.

I'm sorry but the world's top athletes are overhyped, overindulged, and overpaid.

You consider working out and practicing golf sacrifice? You and I have an entirely different mindset about the meaning of that word.

No kidding. I cringe when people equate training for pro sports events and then being paid in the top .1% of all Earthlings a "sacrifice." I don't begrudge them their money....capitalism = whatever the market will bear. But sacrifice? Let's not glorify what they do. It's golf, meant for our entertainment consumption. Get real.

Sacrifice is a 22 year old boy in 115 heat in Iraq, making less than $30K per year, waking up every day knowing it could be his last.

Sacrifice is NOT a professional golfer making $XX million per year being asked to practice and play golf four weeks in a row, and then being pampered beyond mere mortals imagination for his every need.

I'm tired of hearing this "...time away from my family" crap from some of these guys. A lot of people work all week, or consecutive weeks in a row on the road, away from their families, and don't have the luxury of a Hilton or Marriott suite, a full size courtesy car, eating in the finest restaurants, and a private jet to fly them home, and Momma at home with the nanny to help in the big house in the exclusive gated community

Not to mention, the tremendous "sacrifice" made by guys with a schedule like Mickelson involves extensive travel only six months out of the year, not year round.

These guys should hit their knees every night thanking God he gave them the talent to do what they do (and I say that as perhaps the least religious individual you would ever meet!).

And last but not least, I want to puke when I hear an interview with Tiger on XM or GC, and he does that pause, then a deep exhale and says" It was (insert your choice: TOUGH, BRUTAL, A WAR) out there!!!".

Sorry for the rant. that's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it!

Sincerely,

Dennis Miller Wannabee

Preach on Brother, Thought I was the only one tired of the BS. Amazing that no one has a Family issue that causes them to miss a major. They throw the Family excuse around when its needed.

Yes, and yes we do! If you think the worlds top athletes are overhyped, over whatever...then you shoulnd't be watching them. If you do, doesn't that take all the enjoyment out of sports watching all these spoiled athletes make loads of money! BTW, did you hear Tiger just signed a 100 million contract with Gatorade?
