After reading a lot of posts on this forum I can see that people seem to have a huge amount of collective dislike for Poulter, Villegas, Parnevik and other golfers who dress DIFFERENTLY. Can someone please tell me what the problem is? You turn the TV on and see robots in beige chinos and a white polo - WOAAHHH EXCITING! We need something to spice up the game and this is a good way to do it. It is attracting more people to the game who previously had the stereotypical view that golf is for old men. So, just because you can't carry off pink pants and fluorescent orange shoes don't slate others who can! If everyone in the world was the same, god wouldn't we live an interesting existence.
I am certainly not saying that everyone should dress like this though. If there is one group of golfers I hate its the MIURA BLADES-JL CLOTHING-STAFF BAG&POWAKADDY-CLAN-EVEN-THO-IM-OFF-18. However, characters like Poulter spice the game up with their charisma (much like Seve did in his prime). So, when Ian strolls onto the 1st tee on thursday in some colourful slacks, no derogatory comments please.
Am I wrong?

Word. I live in a very rural town and I always try to have at least a semblance of unique clothing. I just wish I was skinnier. Poulter, Badds, Ogilvy, and Scott are good for the game. Even Tiger will go cutting edge on us every now and then. Now, if I could just get some shoes that had a kangaroo wearing boxing gloves on them like Appleby................

Just because we knock on somebody's fashion doesn't mean we dislike them as person and especially as a golfer...
Easy target for jokes? Yes.... stellar example for overweight golfers to dress in public...no.....
The irony is that the 70s were probably the most daring and worst era of golf fashion...I mean....the bad haircuts magnified the ridiculousness of golf fashion...absolutely fascinating and hilarious....
Yeah I just pissed off my dad, but for a worthy cost....

JLindeberg is actually what kind of got me started playing golf. Before then I would hardly flip to the middle of a tourney during sunday to let my visiting grampa check the scores. I had JL non-golf clothing and drifted into buying from the Futuresports line and was like" maybe i should try and play some golf, I got the gear" and I loved it.

Couldnt agree with you more, also like someone else said, what drew me more to the game from the occasional weekend golfer that I used to be a while back was the cool clothes that some of the players wear. It does spice up the game, khaki pants and shorts with a white polo get really old really quick. More power to the poulters, villegas, parnevicks, baddelys, and scotts out there.

I never had a problem with the way Poulter dressed, I had a problem with his mannerisms and actions on course. He's thrown some of the biggest fits I've ever seen in pro golf, slamming clubs into the ground, cussing, the whole nine yards. Loud clothing + bad temper = not a guy I want to watch much.
However, after watching his Playing Lessons from the Pros, my view of him has changed quite a bit. He seems like a really down to earth guy, and he explained that the tantrums are his way of dealing with a bad shot and getting over it. That may not make his actions right, but at least I've seen a different side of him and understand where he's coming from a bit better.

Good post, I agree completely I like seeing someone like Poulter coming out with unusual clothing (some of it I like, others I don't) but atleast their ballsy enough to do it.

love cutting edge and daring golf fashions, the wilder the better.
it helps to back it up with trophies and prize money, but these guys are pros for god's sake.
the worst pro is probably 100x's better than the best guy you've ever seen play golf in real life (unless you hang out with pros!)
the game evolves. it has to. someone mentioned the "terrible 70's" but if you look closely, we are actually coming back to those styles. the shaggy haircuts, slimmer physiques, the fitted clothing, we aren't too far away. and imho, we're better off. the baggy stuff is bland and BORING

Like the look. I even wear some "loud" outfits - that is - compared to my friends.
