Hey guys, a few friends and I are about to start up a Golf Club for our school, yea its pretty strange that we don't already have one, and I had some questions to ask you knowledgeable ones.

We are hoping to talk to some local golf clubs and try to work out a deal with them to give our students and faculity discounted greens fees. So, I was wondering:

1) Is this even possible?

2) Which type of club (public, county, private, etc) is more likely to offer us this deal?

3) Who at the club do I contact to ask about the discount?

I think that this will benefit both our members (saving us money on greens fees and allowing us to get out there more often) and the club itself (bringing them more business).

Thanks in advance for the help

First start the club and register with your local Section, see the NY Met instuctions below and USGA here:
http://www.usga.org/playing/handicaps/gett...le_by_laws.html

Second go to the university athletic department, administration or alumni office to get support.

Then go to clubs to negotiate deals. Public courses obviously want business especially during the week. For private clubs you can get a sponsor from your alumni base for local private clubs. They will probably let you play a few outings during the week

In the NY Met:

CLUBS WITHOUT REAL ESTATE

Organized groups of who are not affiliated with a single golf facility, are called “clubs without real estate”. These clubs must meet MGA and USGA definition of a golf club and have a formal constitution and meet the requirements of “peer review” for handicap purposes. The MGA requires a minimum of 30 members. We welcome inquiries about forming a club and can provide assistance in getting started.

Thanks so much for your help and the links. I will definatlely use that USGA golf club form and also can use that to present to Student Council. And great advice to talk to the Athletic Dept. for support and maybe they can even try to arrange something for us or definately help us out with it.

And again, who would I need to talk to if I call up a public course to talk to them about this?

I'm hoping to get the club formulated sometime next week and have a proposal and such ready for Student Council. Thanks again for the help Coach smile.gif

Depends on the course, but basically the gut who counts the $, who is the Manager, Director of Golf or Head Pro.

I assume you guys do not want to have big bucks outings, but if you tell them you want food and beverage, they will be more receptive. Plus you still want to create a "club", so have a sandwich and a beer after golf to create camaraderie. Create a Stanley Cup Trophy to have a winner each week, and have The Cup be used and abused by the winner between tournaments.

What college?

PS. I still would suggest you try to bring in some alumni. They have $$ and will help you negotiate with clubs. cool.gif

Thanks again Coach. And I was thinking about telling the club that we will plan on spending a decent amount of time there as well as our professors, who are all Ph.D.'s and M.D.'s so they would be dropping decent amont of money. Which would be great for the club.

Also getting the Alumni Association involved would be a great idea, especially because our school Alumni are rediculously active with our students.

And the school is NJMS (New Jersey Medical School). The problem with me telling them we will hang out there a lot and stuff is that we probably won't because we don't have much free time due to the workload. But I will tell them that our professors, who probably play golf, would be spending a lot of time and cash there (which I really think they would).

Thanks again for the help, I owe you one Coach and if you like I can keep you updated on whats going on with the club good.gif
