That was my impression too about smog. Beautiful course and it's great to see great golf being played, especially from Els and McIlroy.

I'm glad I had it recorded and watched it this morning before getting online.

Phil played very well on back 9 and worked hard to get his par on 18.

Anyone else get distracted watching the goofy security goons with their little AT&T backpacks and striped shirts? Looked like on of them saw some serious action when the group was leaving the 3rd hole. Fat guy runs toward someone pointing his finger... Looked like Paul Blart.

Glad to see Phil win.

The way Phil has been playing lately-especially with his improved putting, it's going to be a very interesting 2010. Although Tiger won 6 times in 09, it just seemed like Phil got the best of Tiger more often times then not when they went head to head. Phil>Tiger at the Masters, CA Doral Championship, US Open, Tour Championship, and HSBC.

+1 kemau. lets not forget tiger only finished outside the top 10 twice this year, lowest scoring average.. etc... yes phil had a solid year, and is playing great lately but phil has to do something miraculous to take over and 2010 is setting up very nicely for El Tigre

I know its improved putting that is turning good play into wins.......but man Phil has hit his irons very well the past two months, I saw him consistently hitting it closer to the hole with his irons than his playing partners. Some credit due for Harmon, his swing is looking good.

I am thinking Phil wins cause of the Fubuki Cally combo....which will be under my tree for Christmas...

No question Phil is great at making a mess with some poor shots down the stretch but puts in the long putt to safe pay...oh myyyyyyy...did he hit under the ball on the second chippy shot.

Gotta love Phil and good for him to beat Tiger...AGAIN...! Poor Tiger looked like he wanted to be somewhere else the last couple of holes...!

One thing i have to rant about is that the commentators are extremely boring and talked about nothing more than "this is the 2nd shot for tiger.... ok he has about 18 feet for birdie". Now I'm more sure if I would prefer them over Johnny Miller if i have to choose russian_roulette.gif I guess they are european tour commentators?
Also, there's no distance to hole except what you see at the tee boxes, and no club selection either. I guess the strong field made up these shortcomings...

Give me Dennis Hutchinson or Renton Laidlaw any day over Miller or Nantz -especially Tirico....I also would rather just watch them play golf rather than hear some commentator drone on about how so and so just hit a wedge from 230 when you can clearly see the 3 on the bottom of the iron...

Yaaawwwwnnnn......give me Johnny Miller over those lumps of dough any day. I mean could two people be more boring if they tried? I know a lot of people dont like JM but at least he keeps your attention. I have to say though they are very polite....no offensive comments...... russian_roulette.gif

I think that Phil loves his Fubuki - and that can set a man's head at ease on the tee. I mean, it's a great feeling when you like your driver set-up. All you have to do is put a swing on it. I think that Phil has that confidence on the tee, this year.

I agree, those guys put me to sleep (not to mention it was late at night). They are so boring compared to the announcers we have here in the states, even if you don't like our announcers here you have to admit they at least keep things interesting. My wife, who knows nothing about golf or TV golf broadcasters, asked me "how do you watch this with those guys announcing? They are so blah sounding."

congrats to phil. nice to see him deliver a V

They didn't replay it from a closer angle, but I think he topped it so hard, he hammered it down into the turf. Hence the club switch and the chunk out (and the ensuing clutchasaurus putt).

That last half hour made me want to revisit the "Could a 13-16 handicapper beat a PGA Tour pro?" thread. Bizzaro World out there.

Considering he was trying to hit a flop, I'm pretty sure he just went right under it.

How could the ball have been buried so much after he swung if he went under it? Seems like he topped it.

He was trying to flop it, club went under the ball and removed any remaining grass that was supporting the ball, ball then sank lower and his recovery shot was a pitch and run.

I'm enjoying the coverage. The Brits know how to announce and their leader board seems to put golfers in the order they are supposed to be in.

where's the guideline for how order is supposed to be???

I always thought for players that are on the same number, the one that is further
along in the round is listed first on the scoreboard.

I think that's what it is. Tiger will be starting his round and be the same number as someone further along and Tiger should be off the first page but they either extend it or kick someone else to the second page.

That's correct. Whiffing underneath a ball with opened up lobwedge happens more often than people would realize. They play on very good conditions with thick rough where ball could sit up at times. I believe Tiger, Lorena and Monty has whiffed on telecast in the past with similar lies. Give Phil some props for getting it up and down with very clutch next two shots on 16th hole for his hard earned par.

Was I the only one who heard what sounded like a young child or baby yell in Ernie's backswing on the shot he hit in the
water on 18?

In regard to Ernie on the 72nd hole yesterday:

One of the announcers said that he had 218 to the front of the green, and he had a 5 wood in his hands. The flag was about 25-27 back from the front, which if we're talking distance in yards (the English commentators almost always quote the distances in yards), that seems about right for a easy 5 wood for Ernie. I'm sure that he was thinking 230-235 max for his 2nd shot, which could have put him on the green with a eagle putt, or at least a very good chance to make birdie.

Now I didn't hear anything from the gallery (my wife yelled GITH at the top of her lungs...), but that shot landed in the water least 10-15 yards short of the green, which means he hit it around 200 at best. Many of the players commented that the ball wasn't flying as far as they were used to, but after 71.5 holes, I'm sure Ernie had his distances dialed in.

So I have to agree with you, maybe he was thrown off. Either that or he hit about the worst 5 wood he ever hit exactly at the moment that he least needed it. Tough way to go down...

Congrats to Phil, and I hope Tiger is feeling/playing better next week.

I think Ernie just duffed the shot. He still could of made a par and possibly gotten into a playoff. And I doubt Tiger was ill. The news media would have been all over it. Just cause someone here speculates it doesn't make it so. He just didn't play well from the beginning. If he skips the Australian tournament, then I'll believe it.

The Smog in China is getting worse, not better.
Even the Main Stream Media is agreeing: China has the worst pollution ( not the USA).

China is building HUNDREDS of Large Coal Energy Plants....to add to the smog.....if it get any worse, maybe the players won't want to show up.

HSBC has TRILLIONS$$$ in assets , so maybe they would just up the appearence ante $ for players to show up.

Still, I love this tourni. rolleyes.gif
