Why is "this" the number that I hear over and over again? Who made this the magical number and why? There just seems to be so many different variables to all the different putters out there, let alone the ones on the course to call this the magical number I always hear.

Guru's, please explain.

I think Scotty may have had a hand in it. His 35" putters were 330 grams so he decided to go in 10 gram increments as he released shorter putters.. so 35"/330g, 34"/340g, and 33"/350g. I see some even going to 360g in 33" putters (Byron Morgan). It's all a matter of preference though.. I like the 33" Scottys in 350g myself.

I'm no guru, and I don't know - but I kept wanting a heavier swingweight and just ordered a putter with 400 g head (delacruz).

Simple market forces at work on this one. For as long as I can remember, I've had layers of lead tape on every putter I've used, because I liked the feel of a heavier head. I never knew how much the heads originally weighed, I just knew I liked them heavier. Enough people were of the same mind, apparently, and the manufacturers started to cater to the will of the buyers. I think 350 was just a nice, round number.

There are a lot of very light putters out there. What's your current head weigh? Do you still add tape?

i always feel i can get a smoother stroke with a lighter putter such as my 320 tp mills handmade. but greens just arent fast enough to use that putter all the time

I agree with triumph17 that it's scotty's doing.
He made it "Tour Weight".

Perfect example of how everybody is different. With a light putter my stroke gets to jerky or handsy. The extra weight lends itself to a much smoother rocking of the shoulders for me personally. I have a 350g C&L on the way.

i own a 350 putter also, but it seems for short strokes the lighter one works. when i get long with it on slower greens its not so great.

Agreed, there are still a lot of light putters out there. However, the higher-end offerings are coming up in weight- Ping Redwood, Cameron Studio Select, Kia Ma, whatever Odyssey's top of the line is, etc.
My gamer right now is a Byron 007X, at 355 grams, so no lead tape on that one. Most all my others have a few layers of tape- Scottsdale Anser Copper, Anser F, Scotty Studio Design #5, etc. etc.

i've cut my scotty circa 62 no 2 down 34" and added 20g of tungsten powder down the shaft. it is 350g now and has improved my stroke. just wish i could line it up better, i can't seem to put in the hole but distance control is good.

Oh yessss. Couple with the Sandvik Ti shafts, they feel like butter. I've got two identical sets, and have never seen any others.

Most pros use 330-340 gram heads. The asian market typically requests a shorter putter such as 31-33" so the 350 gram head works to keep the swing weight feeling just right. Byron's biggest seller is the 365 X-proto in Asia. He's got a really big market over there. The 365 grams also gives him the ability to shave off weight if requested. It's easier to take off weight than add it.
There's no magic, it's all about options.

I have never heard of Sandvik - tried to google the company, can't seem to find it. There's a Sandvik Specialty Metals, but I can't find shafts on their site - but I think they are the mfgr.

I really like my current irons and shafts, so for once, I am not restless (famous last words), but if I were, these would be right back at the top of the list. Gotta have a set once along the way. Things of beauty to look at, too.

Scotty has since increased the weight in his retail putters: 33"/360g; 34"/350g; 35"/340g. Everyone was begging for the 34"/350 gram combo because most of the Circle T putters being sold have these specs. However, many of the Scotty Camerons actually used on tour have headweights far less than 350 grams. Personally, I think 350 grams is too heavy; I like my putters around 330 grams.

I play a 36" putter - a 350gm head feels like a car battery on the end of the stick. I much prefer a 330gm or so putter head.

Interesting comments...

Having just tested retail cameron's ie: the circa 62 (which I like) I find the weight too light ie 330grams....
why I feel it's too light is because my wrist twitches affect the putter swing path, where as with a heavier 350 or 355g this doesn't happen as much.
I am sure that lots of players probably feel this way...I cannot be the first one.

However I have a question...

If one had a circa 62 at 330g how could one increase the weight-? without addiing lead tape.
Can the cameron shop increase the weight-?

The Custom Shop can't increase the weight. Your best option without tape is to put tungsten down the shaft. If it's a Circa 62 No. 3, you can find an Asian spec with a 350g head on the bay.

Like KD said, the best option would be to find an Asian spec Circa at 350 grams. But you can also have tungsten weights installed by Tom Slighter at SlighterGolf.com. This will run you $89 plus shipping, and his work is awesome. Here's an example:

Actually I prefer 350g and up. I love a heavier putter. I can't explain it, but it helps me judge distances better, especially on faster greens.
