As I look at my bag, i would love to squeeze 3-5 more yards out of my 4 iron, and noticed my 4-5-6 irons are 3 degrees apart, and then goes to 4 degrees apart. Was thinking of bending my 4 and 5 irons 1 degree strong.

Just curious if anyone else has done this? Basically have the 4 iron play a tweener yardage, negating the need for a separate 3 iron or hybrid type. I'm just more comfortable with a 4 iron in my hand than a 4 hybrid.

Basically going from

24 degree 4 iron
27 degree 5 iron
30 degree 6 iron
34 degree 7 iron

to

22 degree 4 iron (+2)
26 degree 5 iron (+1)
30 degree 6 iron
34 degree 7 iron

My setup is:

58
54
50
w - 46
9 - 42
8 - 38
7 - 34
6 - 29
5 - 24
4 - 19
18* PNT

I personally love having my irons with these gaps, i can hit the 4 iron about 210-215 and full swing the PNT 230-235 , can cut down on the PNT to 220 area and it leaves room for the extra wedge. My gaps are a little bigger towards the end of the bag but I like the consistent gaps on the short irons when you need to be more accurate.

Here is my take on it. With 14 clubs you are going to have a gap somewhere so you have to decide where you want that gap to be. Most people choose to deal with a gap somwehere in their wedges or more towards the long iron/hybrid end of the spectrum. My humble opinion is that I score with my wedges and not from 200+ out so I choose to have my gap between my 3 wood and 4 iron. I use a hybrid to fill the gap because which works out great because hybrids are probably the most versatile club you can have in the bag. Using this perspective has allowed me to have even 4 degree gaps from my LW up to my 4 iron. I used this setup all year and never did I feel that I really could have used another club because of a gap in my yardages. Below is my setup and I apologize for being longwinded, I just feel that bag setup gets overlooked too often.

3 wood - 14
hybrid - 19
4 iron - 24
5 iron - 28
6 iron - 32
7 iron - 36
8 iron - 40
9 iron - 44
PW - 48
GW - 52
SW - 56
LW - 60

It took me a while to come up with a bag setup that gave me comfortable distance gaps. I give up a little distance by not bagging any graphite-shafted woods, but it is worth having predictable 15-20y gaps for all distances from 90 to 235. My SW and LW distances don't fall in-line, but I'm not consistent enough to use them for full shots. There are not many courses I play that allow for a shot into the green of over 235 (or at least a shot that I feel is going to put me in a better position than laying up). If needed, I can remove the 16* or 60* in order to put a 3+ in the bag.

1H - 16
3H - 20
4H - 23
5i - 27
6i - 31
7i - 35
8i - 39
9i - 43
PW - 47
GW - 51
SW - 56
LW - 60

I am going to have my irons bent next year to the following:

4 - 24
5 - 28
6 - 32
7 - 36
8 - 40
9 - 44
p - 48
then 52,56,60.

Just makes sense to me.

Bending of lofts in the right direction will benefit from some launch data for each club.
