Nice scoop.
It would be very interesting to know both his handicap and distances too.
He's was a wonderful athlete and a big man, and, could potentially be as long as some tour players.

While I have not played with him I have hit balls next to him at the range before a couple tournaments and he just had LASIK at our clinic in Denver. He used to play a tournament every year at a country club I was a member at in Colorado. He is somewhere around a two handicap or so and does hit it a long way. He has a really good swing considering the abuse his body was put through in the NFL.

From a recent Golf Digest interview:

"The best my handicap has been is plus-1. It's about scratch now"

This was from an interview last year:

Are you an equipment junkie? Do you stay on top of the technology?
I always think it's the Indian and not the arrow. I'm not a huge equipment junkie. I hit TaylorMade woods, A Scotty Cameron putter and I have the Ping Eye 2 as my irons.

What's your lowest round?
Sixty-four.

Where did you shoot it?
I actually shot it twice. Once at Cherry Hills and once at the Club at Black Rock in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

as of this summer he is reppin the pings i10/s57's. tour w wedges. I worked at the club at black rock and handled his bag a lot and gave him rides around the club etc. he wins the club championship all the time, check the plaque on the wall next to the shop by the stairs. and as far as his hdcp, last i heard was about a 1 and that was from the guys in the shop setting up the tournaments.

Fit him on the range at Golf Club at Castle Pines (International Course) two years ago and he was playing TMAG. Not surprised Ping is getting him to play their stuff. The shafts in driver and top end of his bag are the ones I would have picked. Surprised at the DG SL weight in his irons though. Great swing and yes, he is still a big guy and hits the ball a ton.

He used to play a private tourney at a country club here in LA. This was like 17 years ago when he was about 32 years old. He was using Taylormade ICW 5's or 11's. He had an original Big Bertha driver and was using Titleist Balata's. I've never seen anybody hit the ball harder, and I've seen a lot of guys on tour including Darren Clarke on Taylormade's test range; who is a BIG boy. The first hole was a short par4 around 290 and Elway stepped up and drove the green. To this day I've never seen anybody hit an iron shot like he did (maybe it's because of ball technology today). But when he'd hit his irons, he'd drive the ball low and out of nowhere because of the compression and spin, the ball would just lift straight up in the air and land soft, it was really surreal. Pretty cool to see him golfing when he was physically in his prime...
