So the other day I am playing a long par 5, went for the green in two and pulled my second shot left of the green towards a nearby tee box into a group of guys waiting to tee off. Thankfully no one was hit. Yelled fore. My ball ended up about 8 feet from where they were standing.
I got up to them and waited for them to all tee off, apologized, but I still felt like a jerk.

Besides hitting a better second shot, could I have done anything better?

Thanks.

It happens. And you did the right thing too by admitting you where sorry. Hopefully, the group on the tee told you not to worry about it.

When that sort of thing happens to me, I try and make sure the other guys are alright and that they know it was not intentional or anything. Usually the other party are pretty understanding so everything works out. If you've apologised and they're ok with it, you just have to move on mate, otherwise you'll spend the rest of your round 'feeling like jerk' rather than focusing on your game and enjoying yourself.

odds are most people that you accidentally hit into, have also at one point in time done the same thing themselves

you did the correct thing, definetly say you're sorry and the group should accept it graciously

sometimes people will be mad, (sometimes noise conditions will make it impossible for them to hear you yell fore and they may think you forgot) but that's the vast minority as most folks really do understand that it wasn't on purpose

You did well you yelled FORE and apologized. I had a group pull their tee shots on a par five into us on a par 3 green and never yelled Fore or apologized, and two of the 3 shots were within 10' of me.

You did what was necessary.

You are not obliged to, but you could always give the cart girl $10 to buy the guys a soft drink next time she sees them.

You yelled FORE, patiently waited for them to hit and apolgized. You did everything you could. Hopefully, they didn't creat a fuss over it.

But most importantly, did you get up and down for the BIRD???

agree with the posters here, a sincere apology followed by extreme caution the rest of the round is all you can do. It happens to all of us hitting around doglegs..pushing, pulling shots more than we normally would. It's part of the game but you did the right thing.

i've hit into a couple of groups this year, herculian hitter that i am (LOL), usually i jog up to them on the next tee and apologize...and then hit last on the remaining tee boxes just to be safe haha

My approach, when it has happened to me, i.e. I'm the one being 'hit into', particularly when it was your second shot on a par 5 is to enjoy the hell out of the fact that someone has that much, almost, game. Heck, you said you were sorry, they WERE in a tee box and not on or just clearing the green you were supposed to hit, eh, let it go.

You've not really done enough for me.

Personally I'd but them all a box of Pro V1s with "I'm sorry" stamped on them. $40 for the next round of drinks so they can remember you and perhaps arrange group therapy so that they can get over the stress of it all.

Maybe in 6 months time get together and make sure bygones are bygones.

If someone almost hits me, but yells "fore", I don't even expect an apology. Errant shots happen, and it isn't intentional. The people who don't yell "fore" need to get pummeled. Hitting int your group when you're on the same fairway or green, is a bit different. If I'm on the fairway and someone hits int us, I would expect an apology. But, if someone hits from a fairway over, I've got no problem with that. An apology is a nice gesture though among gentlemen.

Well, thankyou everyone for the kind words. I still believe that golf is one of the last sports existing where sportsmanship and tradition still matter, as such, I try to play that way. I guess I'm just old-school. By the way, I hit a perfect wedge to 2 feet and made birdie. .......

You handled it well. Although it apparently wasn't a problem in your case, people need to be sure they yell FORE really loud on a long shot like that, so they can be heard.

i think some folks suffer from a little bit of deer in the headlights phenomenon when they hit an errant shot towards other golfers......they see the ball tracking and don't yell "FORE!!!" as timely and as forcefully as it needs to be bellowed to afford the potentially affected parties the opportunity to do whatever it is they can to take cover.

i try to be careful and patient (though it's cuts against every fiber of my being to be patient), but on those rare occasions when i accidentally hit a ball towards folks i didn't see, i scream "FORE!!" like a dadgum percussion bomb. that's about all you can do.
